Minnesota Approved Defensive Driving Courses Compared for Drivers 55+

Minnesota approved defensive driving courses can look similar until you reach the enrollment terms. A lower listed price may come with a firm refund restriction. Another course may let you switch devices or request a refund while you are still working through it.
If you have already confirmed that you need the age 55+ insurance course, this guide helps you compare those buying decisions. It focuses on documented prices, completion windows, certificates and cancellation terms.
General information only: Confirm your insurance eligibility and the exact course and format before paying. Provider terms and enrollment prices can change.
Confirm the insurance purpose first
Minnesota law requires an appropriate premium reduction of at least 10% on qualifying private-passenger vehicle insurance issued, delivered or renewed in the state for insureds age 55 or older who successfully complete the approved accident-prevention course or refresher. The original course is four hours; the refresher may be no more than four hours. To keep the reduction, you retake the original course or take the refresher every three years. 1
Ask your insurer which coverages and vehicles receive the reduction, how much that means in dollars, and where to send your certificate. Paying more for a course does not establish a larger statutory benefit.
The Minnesota DVS directory identifies approved organizations and their classroom or online formats for this insurance purpose. Its approval is not a ranking of teaching quality and does not establish acceptance for your ticket or court order. Match the organization and format to the actual product you intend to buy. 2
Compare the enrollment terms you can verify
MyRoadWise compared the DVS approval directory with providers’ own enrollment pages, FAQs and refund policies. We did not buy these courses, test their teaching or accessibility, measure support response times, or verify a completed checkout. There is no overall winner or statewide cheapest-course claim.
The table covers two providers with published terms for each comparison field. Other approved options appear separately because some purchase conditions still need confirmation. Listed prices are course quotes; your payable total may differ after taxes or selected extras.

| Course and delivery format | Listed course price | Completion window | Certificate | Published refund condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AARP Smart Driver, Minnesota online | $27 for AARP members; $30 for nonmembers | 60 days from registration; saves progress | PDF available at course completion | Request within 60 days of registration; unavailable after the certificate has been processed |
| St. Cloud State / Precision Driving Center, online self-paced | $23.95 | 60 days after purchase; permits repeated logins | Included upon completion | No refunds for online-course registrants |
| St. Cloud State / Precision Driving Center, in-person classroom | $24 | Scheduled class; attend for its duration | Included upon completion | Withdrawal requires at least five full business days’ notice; less notice means no refund |
AARP terms: 34. St. Cloud State terms: 56. DVS lists AARP Driver Safety Program and Precision Driving Center of Minnesota / St. Cloud State University for classroom and online courses. 2
AARP: a published refund window and device flexibility
AARP’s Minnesota price selector shows the member and nonmember quotes in the table. Select Minnesota when comparing prices: a quote displayed for another state is not the Minnesota offer. Membership is not required to buy the nonmember product. 3
The Minnesota FAQ describes a four-hour course with saved progress and 60 days to finish. It supports computers, smartphones and tablets, including switching devices. Completion makes a PDF certificate available for download. 4
If you need to move between devices or want a published cancellation window, examine AARP’s terms closely. AARP excludes refunds after 60 days or after the completion certificate has been processed; a request that qualifies is issued within 30 days after receipt. 4
For online-course help, AARP lists phone/text support at 1-800-350-7025 and an email channel. Its call center publishes weekday and weekend hours in Central Time, including a Thursday afternoon closure. Check those hours if you plan to study when help is likely to be needed. 7
St. Cloud State: choose the format before accepting the refund terms
Precision Driving Center offers self-paced online, live virtual and classroom instruction. Its self-paced course has a 60-day access period. Live virtual participation requires a camera and microphone; up to two people may use one device, but each must register and pay separately. 5
St. Cloud State’s self-paced product may suit you if its completion window fits your schedule and you accept the no-refund condition. Choose a scheduled class if you want an instructor and can commit to the class time. These are format choices, not findings about which course teaches better.
The published classroom policy allows a withdrawal with at least five full business days’ notice. It also allows a date change without an additional fee when you give at least two full business days’ notice. If the provider cancels a class, registrants may transfer or receive a full refund. 6
The 55+ page lists $24 for the four-hour live virtual course. 5 Ask which cancellation policy applies to a live virtual registration. The policy separates online and classroom courses without expressly assigning the live virtual product to either category. 6
The FAQ says there is no final test or driving element. Online questions are not graded. Registration help is available through Precision Driving Center at 320-308-1400 or 1-888-234-1294. 8
Other approved options: resolve these questions before buying
These providers publish useful details, but unanswered purchase questions keep them out of the comparison table. Ask about those terms directly; a missing detail on the reviewed page does not establish that the provider lacks a policy or offers a poor course.

Minnesota Safety Council: check the device and enrollment process
DVS lists Minnesota Safety Council for classroom and online insurance courses. Its four-hour online page quotes $27 plus tax and says progress is saved. The provider recommends a desktop or laptop; its mobile instructions warn that failing to follow them can lose course progress. 29
Each participant needs a separate account and unique email address; people sharing an email are directed to call for assistance. Registration help is listed at 651-228-7328, with separate course technical support at 1-833-367-2576. The page says you receive a completion certificate for your insurer. 9
Get the access expiration, product-specific refund policy and certificate delivery method before paying. Those terms were not established from the reviewed page. If a phone is your only device, read the mobile instructions closely and ask whether it fits your setup.
AAA RoadWise Driver: distinguish the online offer from local classes
The DVS directory separately identifies AAA Driving School–Minneapolis and AAA Roadwise Driver. This guide’s additional online option is RoadWise Driver, reached through AAA’s Minnesota landing page. 210
The guest enrollment path using a Minneapolis ZIP code displayed an AAA Minnesota RoadWise Driver 4-Hour cart at $32 for one course. This was a cart quote, not a paid checkout; member pricing and final charges were not verified. 11
AAA’s landing-page FAQ says expiration is shown in the course dashboard and expired training must be repurchased. It gives certificate-access directions after completion and lists support at 1-877-476-1254. Confirm the Minnesota access period, refund policy and exact certificate delivery before purchase; the general FAQ does not establish all those product-specific details. 10
Senior Driving Discount of America: confirm access and support expectations
DVS lists Senior Driving Discount of America as an online provider. Its Minnesota page quotes $15.75 for either the four-hour initial course or four-hour refresher and describes that as a final price without hidden fees. The page says it supports phones, tablets and computers, includes audio read-along, and emails the certificate free upon completion. Treat the price as the provider’s displayed offer until you confirm the payable total. 212
Its refund policy requires a written request before 90 days have passed from registration and excludes completed courses. That refund window does not establish how long course access lasts. Obtain the access expiration separately. 13
The contact page routes technical, account and certificate problems to a support-request form. Its phone line is for general questions only, with weekday Eastern Time hours. That distinction matters if you need someone to troubleshoot by phone while you study. 14
Make a shortlist that fits your actual schedule
Begin with the constraint that would prevent you from finishing. If you need to switch between a phone and computer, examine AARP’s published device terms. If you want scheduled instruction, examine St. Cloud State’s classroom or live virtual options and the conditions for your chosen format.
Then compare the risk of changing plans. A no-refund self-paced course may be acceptable when you are ready to start. A refund window may be more useful when your schedule is uncertain. Neither condition tells you how engaging the course will be; we have not tested that.
For two drivers using St. Cloud State, budget for separate enrollments even when sharing a device in a live virtual class. 5
Use a short call or written question to resolve the terms that matter to you:
- Is this the Minnesota four-hour insurance course in the approved format?
- What is the total payable, including tax, mandatory charges and any certificate delivery choice?
- When does access expire, and can you pause and resume?
- What happens if you withdraw, partially complete the course or miss a scheduled class?
- How do you receive proof, and can you obtain another copy later?

Save the product details and cancellation terms with your receipt. Keep each person’s registration in the correct name, especially when sharing a device. After completion, follow your insurer’s certificate instructions and confirm that it applied the expected reduction.
Ready to enroll? Confirm age 55+ eligibility and the approved Minnesota insurance product with your insurer, resolve any unanswered purchase terms, then enroll directly with the provider whose format fits your needs.
