West Virginia Defensive Driving Course: Eligibility, Benefits, and Approved Options

A West Virginia defensive driving course can help with license points, but you need a course approved for that purpose and the right timing. An insurance discount follows different rules, and taking a class does not itself dismiss a ticket.123
Start with the result you need: protecting your license or lowering your insurance bill. A provider’s general promise that a course is “accepted” does not tell you which benefit it qualifies for.
General information only: Your driving record, DMV notice, court instructions, and insurance policy determine what you need to do. Confirm the course and submission requirements with the authority handling your situation before paying.
Choose the course for your actual goal
The table below shows whom to contact first for each goal. Completing one class does not necessarily qualify you for every benefit.
| Your goal | Where to start | What to establish before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce existing West Virginia license points | WV DMV and its approved-course directory | Current point balance, eligibility, and the exact accepted class |
| Address a pending point suspension | DMV using the notice you received | Whether the statutory course route applies and how to meet the effective-date deadline |
| Seek an insurance premium reduction | Your insurer | Driver and spouse eligibility, approved course, applicable coverages, and actual savings |
| Satisfy a court requirement or request a case outcome | The court named on your citation | Written course instructions and what completion would do in your case |
The point-reduction route comes from West Virginia Code Section 17B-3-6(e). The insurance route comes from Section 33-20-18. Neither provision makes buying a defensive driving course an automatic ticket-dismissal process.23
Can a course reduce West Virginia license points?
Section 17B-3-6(e) authorizes DMV to deduct three points after an approved course when the licensee has not reached 14 points. DMV’s operating guidance adds a once-every-12-month limit and says the points must already appear on your record before you take the class.21
That last condition matters if you have just received a citation. Check the record before booking a point-reduction class. Taking it early in the hope of saving the credit for a later entry conflicts with DMV’s published instructions.
Find out how long the class takes and what attendance it requires. Allow time to finish it; a registration receipt is not proof of completion.
What if you are close to suspension?
For a pending 30-day suspension based on 12 or 13 points, the statute permits submission of course-completion proof and the reinstatement fee before the suspension takes effect to deduct three points and rescind that pending suspension. Section 17B-3-9 sets the reinstatement fee at $50, in addition to other applicable fees and charges.24
The controlling deadline is the suspension’s effective date. Finishing class by that date is only part of the task: the required proof and payment must reach DMV beforehand. Use your notice to ask how to submit them and obtain confirmation of receipt.

If you have reached 14 points, contact DMV about your actual license status before buying a course as a suspension remedy. The statute’s deduction authority is limited to drivers who have not reached that threshold. DMV separately says a suspension already established at 14 or more points is unaffected by the course.21
There is conflicting wording on the agency page: its general course description promises a reduction regardless of the current total, while the statute contains the 14-point limit. This guide follows the statute for eligibility. Treat the broader agency wording as a question to resolve with DMV, rather than permission to assume a course will restore your license.21
Points and the violation record are different
DMV says points remain for two years from conviction, while the infraction remains for five years.1 A lower point total does not show that the violation disappeared.
When you follow up, ask for both your current point balance and your license status. Those answers are more useful than a provider’s general statement that its course will improve your record.
Which courses does DMV list for point reduction?
DMV’s directory names these three contacts. Use the official directory as your starting point and confirm the current offering directly; inclusion does not establish today’s price, available seats, or insurance eligibility.1
| DMV-listed contact | Directory service area | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Aaron Young, Advanced Driving LLC | Multiple locations statewide | 304-573-5223 |
| PN Driver Training, LLC | Multiple locations statewide; directory also mentions virtual classes | 304-481-8190 |
| The Road and You Together Driving School | Jefferson and Berkeley counties | 304-262-1544 or 304-279-1067 |
These contacts come from the approval directory. Compare qualifying classes by date, travel, and full cost. Even an inexpensive course is poor value if it does not count for your goal.
When calling, describe your purpose explicitly: “I need the WV DMV point-reduction class.” Then ask which session you should book, whether the exact format qualifies, what identification to bring, and how the completion certificate is handled.
Can you take the course online?
For point reduction, DMV expressly rejects online defensive driving courses. Yet the same directory says PN Driver Training has virtual classes available. The page does not explain which virtual arrangement qualifies.1
That ambiguity is not a sound basis for treating any internet course as approved. Ask DMV to confirm the exact PN class and delivery method before paying for a remote session. An in-person offering from a listed provider avoids relying on that unexplained virtual listing, though you should still confirm its current approval.
For an insurance or court purpose, ask the insurer or court about the exact course and format. Point-reduction approval answers a different question. Save any written acceptance with the course receipt so you can refer to what was agreed if a certificate is later questioned.
What does a West Virginia defensive driving course cost?
There is no single price established by the sources used here. One DMV-listed provider, The Road and You Together, advertises $200, payable by cash or credit. Its page describes an in-person class lasting up to eight hours and tells prospective students to call about availability before paying a deposit.5
Use $200 as one provider’s advertised price, not a statewide fee or a price comparison. Request current quotes from the other listed contacts. Ask whether the quoted total includes the certificate and whether rescheduling, cancellation, or a replacement certificate carries a charge.
Keep a required DMV payment separate from tuition. For the pending-suspension route described above, the reinstatement fee is a distinct requirement; paying the school does not satisfy that requirement.24
For insurance savings, get a dollar estimate from your insurer and compare it with tuition and travel. An advertised percentage alone cannot tell you whether the class will pay for itself under your policy.
Who qualifies for an insurance premium reduction?
Section 33-20-18 requires an appropriate reduction for specified liability, personal injury protection, and collision coverages when its conditions concerning an insured principal operator and spouse age 55 or older and a DMV-approved accident-prevention course are met. Ask your insurer how the principal-operator and spouse requirements apply to your policy.3
The statutory period is three years, with an approved course required every three years to continue eligibility. The insurer may apply the statute’s driving-history, fault-accident, and conviction conditions. A course taken as governmental or court punishment for a moving violation is excluded.3
The law specifies no fixed discount percentage. It also provides the greater of the qualifying course reduction or a discretionary age-based discount, rather than both.3
Give your insurer the exact course name and intended attendance reason. Ask which covered drivers must participate, which coverages receive the reduction, what certificate it needs, and when the change would take effect. The certificate is the statutory evidence used to qualify for this benefit.3
If you are younger than 55, ask about any separate discretionary course discount. This statute’s age-based entitlement does not establish one for younger drivers.
Will traffic school dismiss your ticket?
The verified DMV point-reduction and statutory insurance routes do not establish an automatic statewide dismissal benefit.23 If dismissal or another case outcome is your goal, seek case-specific instructions from the court handling the citation before enrolling.
Ask these questions together:
- Is there a course option in my case, and do I need permission first?
- Which provider, course length, and format would you accept?
- What deadline applies, and where must I file the certificate?
- What outcome would completion produce: dismissal, a different disposition, or satisfaction of a sentence?
- What appearances, payments, or other obligations would remain?
The answers will establish whether a course option exists in your case and what it requires. Follow the instructions on your citation while waiting. A school’s enrollment confirmation does not tell you what the court will do with your case.
If you hold a commercial license or the citation concerns commercial driving, identify that when seeking advice. This guide does not establish that a course changes commercial disqualification consequences or permits masking a conviction.
What should you do after completing the class?
Use the certificate for the specific purpose you confirmed, then verify the outcome with the receiving authority.
For a routine points request, ask DMV who submits the certificate and how to check processing. For the pending-suspension exception, use DMV’s submission instructions and verify receipt of both proof and payment before the effective date. DMV says its regional offices do not process reinstatement transactions, so do not rely on dropping reinstatement paperwork at a regional counter.12
For insurance, send the requested proof to the insurer and review the resulting policy documents. For a court requirement, follow the filing instructions and retain proof of submission. Keep the original certificate, a copy, your payment records, and the written instructions in one place.
If the intended change does not appear, follow up with the authority that processes the benefit. Ask what is missing rather than buying a second course as a substitute for resolving the paperwork.
Before you enroll
Put three facts on paper: the result you need, the exact class accepted for it, and any deadline for submitting proof. Then confirm the complete cost and certificate process.
For license points, start with the WV DMV Point System and approved-course contacts. Get your insurer’s answer if you want savings, or follow the citation and case-specific instructions for a court matter. Confirm that the class serves your goal before you pay.
