NJ MVC-Approved Defensive Driving Courses Compared

Driver taking an online defensive driving course at a sunlit table
Compare course rules, price, and reporting before choosing an online NJ defensive driving provider.

Start with the NJ MVC list of approved online providers, then compare the exact New Jersey course, its full price, exam rules, and completion deadline. A familiar brand or low advertised price does not tell you whether the course fits your needs.

Some provider pages give conflicting instructions or leave key terms unclear. This comparison covers six providers’ published terms, plus one MVC-listed provider whose current NJ course we could not confirm. It also explains what you still need to ask before paying.

General information only: Prices, promotions, and provider terms can change. Confirm the exact course on MVC’s current list and review the final checkout terms before paying.

Quick Answer

There is no single best course for every New Jersey driver. First confirm that the provider appears on the current MVC list. Then compare the advertised price, assessment rules, completion deadline, refund terms, and what the provider says it reports to MVC.

The six advertised prices supported by the linked provider pages range from $19.95 to $29.00. We did not complete checkout or test the courses, so the comparison does not name a best course or guarantee a final price.

Price note: Prices come from the first-party pages linked in the provider sections below. We did not complete checkout, and no amount is presented as a guaranteed total. Prices and promotions can change without notice.

Listing note: MVC sometimes links a provider name to a root website rather than to the exact New Jersey product. Where that happens, finding a New Jersey course page on the same domain is useful, but it does not prove that MVC intended to approve that exact page or product.

How We Compared the Courses

The MVC directory contains many more online providers than this sample, as well as classroom options. We examined seven entries from our earlier New Jersey research to compare price visibility, course details, reporting, and claims that need clarification. Six appear in the table; DriveSafer is discussed separately because the reviewed route does not establish a current NJ defensive driving product. Inclusion is not a recommendation. Omission is not a warning about another MVC-listed provider.

We used the same checks for each of the seven providers:

  1. Current MVC listing: Was the provider name still shown under MVC’s approved online course providers?
  2. Course identity: Did MVC link directly to the NJ course, or did we have to infer the connection from a root domain?
  3. Advertised price: Was a current public price visible without entering checkout?
  4. Assessment rules: Did the provider explain quizzes, the final exam, the passing score, and retakes?
  5. Completion handling: Did the provider explain certificate access and MVC reporting?
  6. Time and policy limits: Did it publish a completion window, refund rule, and support details?
  7. Claim quality: Did its statements agree with current MVC guidance and New Jersey’s administrative rules?

We did not enroll as paying students, evaluate course entertainment value, or rely on anonymous star ratings. This is a source-based comparison of public course information—not a firsthand classroom-quality review. The same criteria apply to every provider; affiliate status does not determine inclusion or the conclusion.

Use the comparison to identify what you still need to ask. It cannot tell you which course experience you will prefer.

American Safety Institute: Low Public Price, Limited Exam Detail

ASI’s NJ course page advertises $19.95 with no-hidden-fees wording. The page describes a six-hour online course you can use on a phone, tablet, or computer. It says completion is reported electronically to MVC and that you receive printable proof.

The public page did not clearly explain the NJ final exam, passing score, or retake policy. The state assessment requirements are explained below. The page also references New York regulations, so confirm you are buying the New Jersey course.

Before enrolling, ask ASI for:

  • the current final-exam and retake rules;
  • the refund cutoff;
  • the final checkout total; and
  • confirmation that you are selecting the exact NJ defensive driving course.

ASI’s page uses broad phrases such as clearing or eliminating points. Treat those as marketing. The legal benefit is the New Jersey point credit described by MVC and the administrative code.

DriveSafer: Confirm the Exact Course First

The MVC directory still lists Drive Safer LLC, but its former defensive-driving route now identifies a teen driving-hours product. That does not establish that MVC withdrew its approval, and it does not verify a course you can buy for NJ point reduction.

Ask DriveSafer for the exact NJ defensive driving course link and written terms: price, six-hour format, assessment, refund policy, and MVC reporting. If you cannot confirm the product, use the MVC directory to find another course.

I Drive Safely: Clarify Retakes and Follow MVC’s Reporting Instructions

I Drive Safely’s NJ page advertises $29.00 for a six-hour course. It describes eight chapters, a 25-question final, and an 80% passing score. Its completion window is 180 days from registration; the page says students who miss it lose access without notice and are not eligible for a refund.

The exam wording needs clarification. The FAQ says three retakes, but also says you must retake the course if you fail after three attempts. Those are different limits. Ask which applies to the NJ course; the state rule permits up to two retakes after sufficient review.

The page says it reports completion directly to MVC each week. Another section says you may mail or bring your certificate to your local MVC office. MVC says the provider reports completion and driver-submitted certificates are not accepted. Keep your copy for your records and insurer, but do not rely on the suggestion to mail or bring it to MVC.

Improv: Public No-Final-Exam Claim Conflicts With the State Rule

Improv’s NJ page advertises $24.95, with $29.95 struck through. The page did not state when the promotion would end. It says the course takes six hours, works on any device, and has questions during the course with unlimited attempts. It also says there is no final exam.

That creates an unresolved wording problem. N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.5(c)(5) requires an approved online course to present a proficiency examination after all informational modules. The public Improv page does not explain how its in-course questions satisfy that requirement.

This does not establish that the course is unapproved; MVC directly links its Improv listing to the NJ product page. It does mean you should not choose it solely to avoid the state assessment requirement.

Ask Improv to explain:

  • what assessment occurs after the modules;
  • what passing standard applies;
  • how many retakes are allowed; and
  • whether the displayed sale price is the complete checkout amount.

Save the answer if the assessment rules affect your choice.

NTSI: Clear Public Price and Completion Window

NTSI’s NJ page advertises $24.95 as the total cost with no hidden fees. Because we did not enter checkout, it remains a landing-page claim rather than a verified checkout total.

Its public page gives you 30 days after registration to complete the course and says you can ask NTSI for an extension. It also says you can download the certificate immediately and that completion information is sent to MVC weekly on Friday.

The missing piece is assessment detail. The NJ page did not clearly explain the final exam, passing score, or retakes. Do not import those rules from NTSI courses in other states.

Get those NJ assessment rules from NTSI before you register.

The page also says the course can satisfy a court order. A voluntary NJ defensive driving course should not be assumed to satisfy your court unless the court handling your case specifically approves that course and use.

National Safety Council / DriveSafe: Exact MVC-Linked NJ Product

The MVC directory links the National Safety Council entry to its DriveSafe NJ course. That gives this product a clearer identity match than providers for which MVC supplies only a root-domain link.

The NSC/DriveSafe NJ page advertises $24.95 and describes a course of at least six hours. You can take it on a phone, tablet, or computer, and the page gives you 365 days to finish. It also says you can print or download your certificate right away and that NSC sends completion results to MVC.

The public page did not explain enough about the assessment and retake rules for a fair comparison. Ask for those details and the refund terms before paying.

The 365-day window may help if you need flexibility, but confirm that it still applies when you enroll.

The page advertises a 10% insurance reduction. MyRoadWise does not treat that amount as a statewide entitlement. MVC says you may qualify for an insurance rate reduction and directs you to your insurer for details.

Safe2Drive: Useful Course Detail, but Two Claims Need Verification

Safe2Drive advertises $19.95 on its NJ point-reduction page. Its course overview and FAQ describe eight lessons, lesson quizzes, a multiple-choice final, and an emailed or printable certificate.

The page says Safe2Drive will notify MVC within one business day. It also tells you to allow MVC two to three weeks to process the completion and remove the points. Those statements describe different steps, so do not read the one-business-day claim as a promise that your record will change the next day.

The provider also says you can retake the final exam as many times as needed. That conflicts with N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.3(a)(5)(iv), which allows a provider to permit up to two retakes after you review enough course material.

Before enrolling, ask Safe2Drive to confirm:

  • the final checkout price;
  • the NJ final-exam retake limit;
  • the refund terms; and
  • whether the exact course page corresponds to the MVC-listed A & A Safe2Drive entry.

Keep the response with your receipt in case you need to question the course terms later.

New Jersey Rules Every Provider Must Follow

The Approved Online Course Has State Assessment Requirements

Under N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.5(c)(1), (4), and (5), an approved online or DVD course must provide at least six hours of instruction and curriculum information. You must pass each module quiz before moving on, and take a proficiency exam after all modules.

N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.3(a)(5)(iv) sets the passing grade at 80%. A provider may allow up to two retakes after sufficient course review.

That is why a “no final exam” claim or a promise of unlimited final retakes needs follow-up. A provider may use different words, but it should be able to explain how its course follows the state rules.

The Point Benefit Comes From New Jersey, Not the Provider

MVC says an approved course may reduce your accumulated point total by two, no more than once every five years. Points must be on your driving record when you complete the course. If you are taking it for point credit, confirm that the provider uses a State-approved New Jersey curriculum before registering.

A provider cannot give you a larger credit. For more context, see Driver License Points: How the Point System Works and How to Get Points Off Your License.

The Provider Reports Completion to MVC

MVC’s public guidance says the provider notifies MVC within 7-10 business days and MVC does not accept certificates from the driver license holder.

The state rule, N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.8(d), requires the sponsoring agency to submit its completion list within 10 days after each course. It does not say business days. These two timing statements differ; the agency guidance should not be read as extending the regulatory deadline. Neither is a filing deadline for you.

Provider pages may promise faster handling or weekly batches. Use those claims to plan a follow-up, not as a guarantee. Check your record after the provider and MVC have had time to process it.

Defensive Driving Is Not DIP or PDP

MVC states that defensive driving does not substitute for DIP or PDP. If MVC sent you a notice naming one of those programs, follow the notice and any further MVC instructions. Do not buy a regular defensive driving course and assume it will count.

Confirm Insurance Savings With Your Insurer

MVC says the course may qualify you for an insurance reduction. Ask your insurer what applies to your policy. Do not treat a provider’s 5% or 10% claim as a promise about your bill.

Ask your insurer what course qualifies, what documents it needs, what coverage the reduction affects, and how long it lasts before enrolling solely for insurance savings.

How to Choose Your Course in Five Steps

  1. Open the current MVC provider list. Match the exact listed name and destination before using a provider’s marketing page.
  2. Confirm the exact NJ product. A familiar brand or matching root domain is not enough when the site sells several courses.
  3. Compare the full burden, not just price. Check the six-hour requirement, assessments, completion deadline, device access, and support.
  4. Read the refund and checkout terms. A landing-page price may omit optional services or change before payment.
  5. Save your records and verify the result. Keep the receipt and certificate, then check your MVC record or insurance documents after processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest NJ MVC-approved online defensive driving course?

We do not name a cheapest provider because these public prices were not checkout verified. ASI and Safe2Drive showed $19.95. Improv, NTSI, and NSC/DriveSafe showed $24.95. I Drive Safely showed $29.00. The reviewed DriveSafer route does not establish a price for the NJ defensive driving product. Use the linked provider pages above to confirm prices and checkout terms.

Does every NJ online defensive driving course have a final exam?

New Jersey requires a proficiency examination after the course modules. Some providers use different public wording. If a page says “no final exam,” ask how its assessment satisfies N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.5(c)(5).

How many times can I retake the NJ proficiency exam?

N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.3(a)(5)(iv) permits a provider to allow up to two retakes after sufficient course review. A provider advertising unlimited final-exam retakes should explain how that statement fits the NJ rule.

Do I send my completion certificate to MVC?

No. Under MVC’s point-credit procedure, the provider sends proof. The provider reports completion, and MVC says it does not accept the certificate from the driver license holder. Keep your copy for your records and ask your insurer whether it needs one.

Will an NJ defensive driving course dismiss my ticket?

Do not assume so. The statewide voluntary course provides a possible point credit and may support an insurance reduction. It does not, by itself, create a statewide ticket-dismissal right or replace instructions from a court, DIP, or PDP notice.

Before You Pay, Get the Unclear Terms in Writing

Open the MVC provider directory, confirm the exact NJ course, and ask the provider to resolve any unclear assessment or refund terms. Save its answer with your receipt. After completion, keep the certificate until you can confirm the expected point credit or insurance reduction was processed.
