Alaska Defensive Driving Course: Eligibility, Benefits, and Approved Options

Match the course to the benefit you need before enrolling.

An approved Alaska defensive driving course can take two points off your assessed DMV total if you meet the law’s conditions. Eligible drivers age 55 or older can also get an insurance rate reduction. The two benefits have different rules. 1, 2

Start with the reason you need the course. A class for points, a class for insurance, and a class for local ticket dismissal can lead to different results. When you pay the ticket matters too. Alaska DMV’s ordinary point-credit advice differs from the City of Fairbanks’s dismissal steps. 4, 7

General information only: This guide explains Alaska’s published rules and procedures. Your citation, DMV notice, court directions, and insurance policy may require additional steps.

Choose the benefit before choosing the class

Use the table to find who needs to accept your course and proof. The school’s signup page explains the class; the office granting the benefit can confirm your eligibility.

The point-credit and insurance rules come from separate statutes. Fairbanks publishes a local procedure. Required courses are addressed in AS 28.15.253. None of those sources makes a provider’s promise sufficient to establish your eligibility. 1, 2, 7, 1

Two-point reduction has two separate timing rules

Under AS 28.15.241(b), DMV deducts two points from the assessed total when the driver furnishes adequate proof of successful completion of an approved course within 12 months of the driver’s last violation. Not more than one driver improvement or one approved alcohol information course may be used for a reduction in any 12-month period. 1

Enough time may have passed since your last course, but your new course must still end within the deadline tied to your last violation. Write down both dates before you sign up. Ask DMV which violation it is using if you are unsure. A reminder date or fine payment date is not the deadline’s starting point.

Drivers under 21 have another condition. Their driver improvement course must be designed to benefit people under 21 and certified by a national organization. Ask whether the exact course meets that rule. A claim that a school serves Alaska drivers does not answer the age question. 1

Resolve the ticket-payment question first

For the ordinary point-reduction route, DMV says to pay the ticket before taking the course unless you are challenging the ticket in court. Otherwise, DMV warns that the course credit may not apply to your point total. Points are assessed after conviction, while the accumulation periods use the violation date. 4, 1

If you want a local dismissal option, check that option before paying. Fairbanks expressly instructs applicants not to pay until they have applied for and completed its program. Follow the instructions for the route you are actually pursuing; postponing payment without enrolling in a valid program is not a substitute for responding to the citation. 7

For ordinary Alaska DMV point credit, pay the ticket before the course unless challenging it in court. For the City of Fairbanks local dismissal program, apply before the court-appearance date and do not pay before applying and completing the program. Its fine and surcharge still apply. Confirm eligibility and follow the instructions for your route.
Payment instructions depend on the route. Fairbanks’s local dismissal procedure does not establish a statewide dismissal option.* 4, 7

A credit changes the total, not the court’s finding

The course-credit law deducts points from the assessed total. It does not provide a dismissal of the underlying conviction. Alaska’s court information sheet also explains that courts cannot reduce or waive the point value assigned to a particular violation. 1, 5

For example, a two-point credit against a four-point total would leave two points if nothing else changed. The offense itself does not become a two-point offense. The math also does not show that the ticket was dismissed. Ask DMV to confirm its total if other tickets, clean-driving credits, or action against your license are involved.

Find an approved option without buying the wrong product

Use DMV’s 6 to find approved options. The Alaska Court System directs readers there and says to look for the yellow-star symbol identifying defensive driving courses. The directory also includes schools and test proctors offering other services, so a business appearing somewhere on the page is not enough. 5

The directory lists online options including DrivingUniversity.com, idrivesafely, Go To Traffic School, Safe2Drive, and Traffic School Online. These are examples of listed options, not a ranking. DMV labels AARP’s four-hour course as valid for insurance reduction only. It also warns that AlaskaDriver.com’s proctored test locations are only in remote locations and on a military base. 6

Before choosing a product, ask the provider:

  • Does this exact course qualify for my stated purpose and age?
  • How long is it, and does it require a separate test or a visit to a proctor?
  • What is the full price, including certificate or delivery charges?
  • Who sends completion proof to DMV, and what copy do I receive?
  • If I have a court or DMV assignment, can you confirm that assignment’s course requirements?

Keep the course name and the answers with your enrollment receipt. If two products from the same school have different purposes, compare the products rather than treating the school name as a blanket approval.

Online convenience is only useful if you can finish

Check the class schedule, devices you can use, test steps, and proof process. Then decide whether an online option is easier. You may be able to start tonight but still need a later test appointment or proof step. Ask the school for details. This guide does not give a statewide price or promise that every listed class takes the same time.

TR-560 says you can ask the court to subtract the course cost from a fine you still owe, using form TR-405. The judge may or may not allow it. 5

If your deadline is close, give the school the actual date. Ask whether you can finish and send proof in time. Confirm any unclear proof step with the office that needs it. Check acceptance before you pay for a class.

The age-55+ insurance reduction requires more than a certificate

AS 21.96.025(a) requires an insurer to provide an appropriate reduction for a personal motor vehicle liability insurance policy when the vehicle’s principal operator satisfies all five conditions:

  1. Is 55 years of age or older.
  2. Requests the reduction at renewal.
  3. Has had no chargeable accidents under the insurer’s established underwriting guidelines, or moving motor vehicle citations, in the three years preceding the request.
  4. Provides the required satisfactory proof of an accident-prevention course approved under 3, successfully completed within the three years before requesting the reduction.
  5. Did not complete that course as a result of a court order or sentence. 2

Turning 55 does not waive the rule about your driving record. A court-assigned class does not qualify for this statutory discount either. A moving citation in the three years before your request also disqualifies you, so a course taken because of a recent ticket won’t earn this statutory reduction. Ask your insurer whether your policy offers a separate benefit. 2

The law calls for an appropriate reduction. This section does not set a fixed percentage. Ask your insurer how much you would save, which premium charges get the discount, and when it would start. Compare that answer with the full course cost before you pay. 2

The reduction ends no later than three years after the last day of your most recent qualifying course. The clock starts from that course date. You are not promised three full years from the date you send proof. During the policy period, the insurer may cancel the reduction if the principal operator causes an accident or is convicted of a moving traffic violation. 2

Keep the insurer’s proof and timing instructions with your certificate. If you are younger than 55, this law does not grant you the benefit. Ask what your own policy offers.

Ticket dismissal: Fairbanks is a local example

The City of Fairbanks offers a Defensive Driving Dismissal Program for qualifying citations. Its published conditions exclude current CDL holders and require no moving violations or defensive driving course within the preceding two years. The citation must carry four points or less. Applicants must appear at the City Clerk’s Office, 800 Cushman Street, before the citation’s court-appearance date. 7

Fairbanks says not to pay before applying for and completing the program. The approved course, fine, and surcharge remain part of the route to dismissal. Contesting the citation or choosing to have a judge explain the charges and rights makes the driver ineligible for this program under the city’s instructions. 7

This example applies to the city’s program. For another Alaska ticket, ask the office handling it whether a course option exists. Find out who can approve it and what happens to the charge once you meet all the terms. Fairbanks’s rules do not establish your options for a state-trooper ticket or another city’s citation.

A required class needs its own instructions

For a provisional license holder, reaching six points from offenses committed within 12 months or nine within 24 months triggers a DMV-required driver improvement course. DMV prescribes the completion period. Under-21 courses must satisfy the youth-design and national-certification conditions. 1

At those point thresholds, the same statute also allows a court, on DMV’s request, to require an approved driver improvement or alcohol information course in addition to other penalties. The court sets that deadline. The law allows licensing consequences for failure to complete a court-required course on time; course attendance is not a replacement for the other penalties. 1

Have your DMV notice or court order ready when you call a school. Ask the referring office about any unclear course, format, deadline, or proof steps. If DMV requires a driver improvement interview, you need to address that too. The law requires you to comply with reasonable recommendations made at the interview. Failure to appear or comply leads to action against your license under AS 28.15.251(a). 1

If your license is at risk, check the notice now

Alaska’s point system requires action against your license at either threshold: 12 or more points from offenses committed during any consecutive 12 months, or 18 or more during any 24 months. Finishing a class does not guarantee that you will avoid a pending suspension. 1

For proposed point-based action, you have 30 days from the notice date before it takes effect under AS 28.15.251(e). The law makes an exception for immediate action under AS 28.15.181. You can answer orally or in writing within the 30-day period. You can also present relevant evidence and arguments. Read your notice now. Contact DMV promptly about a course credit or point total you want it to consider. 1

If your privileges are already suspended, use DMV’s reinstatement instructions. Its point-suspension process lists additional steps, including proof of SR-22 insurance and applicable fees. Completing a course alone does not complete that process or establish that you may drive again. 8

After completion, verify the result you needed

TR-560 says the defensive driving program sends completion proof to DMV by fax, after which DMV deducts the two points. Ask your provider to confirm reporting and keep your own copy. The statute conditions the credit on adequate proof being furnished to the department; a completion screen alone does not show that DMV has processed it. 5, 1

Then check the outcome with the office responsible:

  • DMV points: confirm receipt of proof and the resulting assessed total.
  • Local dismissal: confirm that every program condition is complete and that the citation’s disposition reflects the intended result.
  • Insurance: submit the required proof, request the benefit at the appropriate renewal, and confirm the reduction on your policy.
  • Assigned course: confirm that the referring office received and accepted completion proof.

Keep receipts, certificates, and written instructions together until the result is confirmed. If you still have a ticket response, renewal, or DMV deadline ahead, put that date on your calendar now.
