North Dakota Approved Defensive Driving Courses Compared

North Dakota approved defensive driving courses need to match the benefit you want. NDDOT lists courses for points, while the Highway Patrol lists courses for insurance savings.12
Safe2Drive and the North Dakota Safety Council differ in listed cost, course time, refunds, and who sends the certificate. A shared provider name does not establish that every course it sells qualifies for both purposes.
General information only: Your driving record, court directions, and insurance policy determine whether a course helps in your situation.
Match the course to your purpose first
For points, start with NDDOT’s approved-course list. For insurance, use the Highway Patrol’s list and ask your insurer whether the exact course qualifies for your policy.123
The Highway Patrol names Safe2Drive’s North Dakota 4-Hr Crash Prevention Course. That is the insurance product discussed here. Its Defensive Driving: Point Reduction course is a separate purchase. Safe2Drive lets you choose between these and a mature-driver course when you sign up.26
Safe2Drive directs drivers 55 or older to its mature-driver course. Check that course’s approval and price before choosing it. The Highway Patrol’s online list does not name a Safe2Drive mature-driver course. We did not obtain a registration price quote for that product.62
If a court or agency ordered a class, get acceptance of the exact online product before buying it. The Safety Council specifically tells court-referred students to confirm online acceptance.14 An approved point course does not establish acceptance for every order.

Compare these supported prices and terms
How we compared: MyRoadWise reviewed agency lists, provider course pages, public registration pricing, and refund policies. This is a limited comparison of published terms, without rankings. We did not buy or complete the courses, test accessibility or teaching quality, time customer support, or verify a final payment total. Prices below are tuition or listed course prices, not guaranteed checkout totals.
Commercial disclosure: The provider links are ordinary source links without affiliate tracking. No affiliate enrollment recommendation is made here.
NDDOT’s point list names Safe2Drive and the North Dakota Safety Council by provider, not by course title. The point rows below are each provider’s course sold for point reduction. Safe2Drive’s insurance product is named by title on the Highway Patrol’s online list.18142
| Exact product and purpose compared | Supported course price (provider-reported) | Published course time and format (provider-reported) | Refund rule (provider-reported) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe2Drive – Defensive Driving: Point Reduction | $27.95 listed course price | Four hours, online; progress saves between sessions | Request within 30 days of registration, before course completion or certificate issuance |
| North Dakota Safety Council – Defensive Driving Course – 5 Hour – Online, compared here for points | $49 NDSC member; $59 nonmember; $80 Court/DOT Required | Approximately five hours, online at your own pace | Online courses are nonrefundable |
| Safe2Drive – Crash Prevention: Insurance Discount | $27.95 listed course price | Four hours, online; progress saves between sessions | Request within 30 days of registration, before course completion or certificate issuance |
The figures and terms come from the course pages, Safe2Drive’s North Dakota course-and-price page, and its refund policy.89101171214
Choose the purpose before using this table. A point course and an insurance course are not interchangeable purchases. If you want both benefits, find the exact product on the Highway Patrol’s list and confirm with NDDOT that the same product counts for points. Confirm your own eligibility too.21
The Safety Council advertises insurance approval too. The Highway Patrol lists several named Safety Council courses, but this comparison does not resolve which listed title matches the five-hour sales page. Its table row therefore compares the supported point option only.142
What the price does and does not include
Safe2Drive’s public pricing flow displayed North Dakota, the chosen course, its purpose, and $27.95 tuition for each of the two products. The course pages advertise no hidden fees and emailed certificates. We did not proceed to account creation or a final payment screen. That session-dependent quote may not reproduce from a direct link. Safe2Drive’s North Dakota course-and-price page separately lists $27.95 for each of the two products.7810
Ask the Safety Council which rate applies to your referral. Paying its Court/DOT Required rate does not itself mean that your court accepts online study.14
For either provider, confirm the amount due for your exact enrollment and ask whether any optional delivery, replacement certificate, or other service changes that amount. Keep the price and cancellation terms with your receipt. Compare the cost of the product you can actually use.
Certificate delivery and state reporting are different steps
Safe2Drive says it emails a certificate after the final exam and lets you print one from your account. For its point course, you sign and submit the certificate to NDDOT. For its crash-prevention course, you sign and send it to your insurer.911
With the Safety Council, you submit the point certificate yourself. Its directions say to handwrite your driver’s license number on the certificate and mail or email it to NDDOT. The page does not give a firm certificate-delivery turnaround.14
NDDOT lists DRS@ND.GOV as the submission address for approved online point courses.1 Save your certificate and submission record, then confirm that the intended point adjustment or insurance reduction was processed. An email in your inbox only proves that you received the document.
If time is short, ask the provider when you can obtain the certificate and ask the recipient what counts as timely submission. Neither a four-hour course label nor an emailed certificate promises same-day state processing.
Other listings need additional confirmation
The agency directories include more options than the table. These examples show why we have not treated every listed provider as a comparable purchase.
Safe Streets Academy: Its North Dakota page lists a $30, four-hour point course and says it emails completion proof to NDDOT for you. It also says that product cannot be used for citation diversion, dismissal, or court orders. Yet its linked North Dakota registration form asks applicants to affirm eligibility for citation dismissal. Get that contradiction resolved before registering, especially if you are acting on a citation. A general refund policy was not established for this product.1516
DriveSafeToday: NDDOT names its four-hour point course. The provider’s exact-product page advertises $24.95 promotional tuition and an immediate certificate download, but gives conflicting reporting instructions: its steps promise provider reporting, while its FAQ tells the student to sign and send the certificate to NDDOT. The two instructions leave it unclear who submits the certificate. Obtain written clarification and a final total before relying on it for a deadline.117
DriveSafeToday’s refund terms also make the cutoff precise: opening the final-exam screen counts as starting the exam, even before answering a question. Paid students must request cancellation before that point. This is more specific than the site’s general money-back banner.18
DriveSafeToday does not appear on the Highway Patrol’s online list. A provider’s approval claim alone is insufficient to include an insurance product in the comparison.2
These unresolved details are reasons for further confirmation, not findings that the courses are unapproved or unusable. They are omitted from the main comparison table.
A course purchase does not settle your eligibility
For existing points, the law allows a three-point reduction in a twelve-month period. Limits apply to which points count, repeat courses, and timing near a suspension or cancellation. Ask NDDOT about your record if you have used courses before or are near a license penalty.4
For an eligible citation, Section 39-06.1-10.1 lets you choose the course route, but you must tell the court when you post bond. Proof must reach NDDOT within 30 days after you notify the court of that choice. You forfeit the bond. You cannot use this route if you made an election within the 12 months before this citation was issued, if the offense carries six or more points, or if it is listed in Section 39-06.1-05. Choosing it also forfeits Section 39-06.1-13 reduction options. It prevents eligible citation points; it does not grant ticket dismissal for finishing a class.4
For insurance, the law calls for an appropriate reduction for qualifying principal operators. Policy and vehicle-use conditions apply. It sets no universal discount percentage. Ask your insurer which course qualifies and what you would save in dollars. The reduction does not apply if you are subject to experience rating or already receive a driver-education premium reduction.5
Our North Dakota defensive driving course article explains eligibility in detail. Choose a product after you identify the benefit and confirm the conditions that apply to you.
Check the details that public pages leave open
The public pages leave some purchase details unanswered: identity checks during the course, language choices, use with assistive tools, optional charges, and firm reporting times. A detail missing from the pages we read may still apply to the course.
If any of those details would determine whether you can finish the course, ask about them before paying. For example, audio narration does not by itself establish compatibility with a screen reader or availability in another language. Test any available sample on the device you plan to use.
Safe2Drive lists phone and email help. Its support hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekends, Central Time, subject to holiday hours.13 We did not test response speed.
If your deadline is close, get a specific answer about certificate delivery and submission. Course access at any hour does not establish that a person is available to resolve a login or certificate problem at that hour.
Questions before choosing a course
Can I use the same course for points and insurance?
Only rely on both benefits after the exact product appears on the Highway Patrol’s list, NDDOT confirms it counts for points, and you confirm your eligibility. Safe2Drive presents separate point and insurance choices. This comparison does not establish dual-purpose approval for either one.612
Does a money-back guarantee cover a completed course?
Read the cutoff. Safe2Drive’s policy requires a request within 30 days of registration and before completion or certificate issuance. DriveSafeToday’s policy cuts off refunds when you reach the final-exam screen. The Safety Council says online courses are nonrefundable.121814
How should I choose between four and five hours?
First choose an accepted product. Then decide whether the published time, refund rule, and submission work fit your schedule. The provider-stated durations describe these products; they do not establish that every point course has the same required length.
Which course has the lowest final cost?
We did not verify final payment totals or every approved product, so this guide makes no cheapest-course claim. Compare the amount due after choosing the correct purpose, rate, and optional services. A promotional price alone cannot settle that question.
Write down the exact product, accepted purpose, amount due, refund cutoff, and certificate recipient before you register. Keep that information until the intended result appears on your driving record or insurance bill.
