California DMV-Licensed Traffic Schools Compared

Verify the exact DMV-listed school, complete price, course fit, support, and reporting plan before enrolling.

California DMV-licensed traffic schools teach an approved curriculum, but sell and deliver it differently. First confirm court authorization. Then compare price, device experience, exam rules, support, and completion reporting.

This guide compares five schools listed as Active in the DMV directory. It is a sample, not a ranking or the complete 211-school set. No provider paid for inclusion, and it contains no affiliate links.

Quick answer: Start with the California DMV Traffic School List. Choose Internet, then match the provider’s exact business name and E-number. Compare what the displayed price includes, whether the course works well on your device, how many exam attempts you receive, how support works, and when the school says it will submit completion.

DMV records checked: September 4, 2026. Public provider terms and controlling DMV materials checked: September 4, 2026.

General information only: A traffic school cannot approve your request, change your court deadline, or guarantee a confidential conviction. Prices, promotions, support hours, course features, and license status can change.

‡ The California DMV internet-school search listed all five records as Active on September 4, 2026. Recheck the exact name, E-number, instruction type, and status immediately before enrolling and again before publication.

The fit signals summarize verifiable differences, not a universally cheapest, easiest, fastest, or best course. Some drivers may value multilingual audio, an app, video instruction, or weekend support more than the lowest price.

Which California Traffic School Should You Choose?

Choose the active DMV-listed course that fits your learning style and court deadline.

  • Want the lowest verified base price in this sample: 5 Dollar Traffic School showed a $5 checkout total before optional $5, $10, or $15 bundles.
  • Want to try the course before paying: Best Online Traffic School said payment is due only after the final exam is passed.
  • Want Spanish or Chinese plus audio: Best Online Traffic School advertised English, Spanish, and Chinese course options with audio narration.
  • Prefer an app-centered course: Aceable advertised app and browser access with videos, GIFs, and short assessments.
  • Want a text-or-video choice: I Drive Safely offered separate text and premium video presentations.
  • Want live help seven days a week: Safe2Drive advertised phone, email, and live-chat support every day.

Before paying, enter the correct court and citation details and identify optional cart items such as audio, a certificate copy, reminders, roadside assistance, or expedited handling.

Confirm court approval, match the active E-number, check the complete price and course fit, and plan for completion reporting.

Check the DMV Record Before the Sales Page

California DMV’s directory lets you search licensed schools by instruction type, license number, business name, language, or location.

Use the directory in this order:

  1. Select Internet as the instruction type.
  2. Enter the provider’s E-number or exact DMV-listed business name.
  3. Confirm that the result says Active.
  4. Compare the phone number and address with the provider page.
  5. Use the provider’s own registration page only after the record matches.

The directory contains similar names and marketing brands. A familiar logo or advertisement is not a substitute for the DMV record.

License check: California DMV says, “You cannot attend or register for traffic schools through our website. Contact the traffic school to register.” If the exact school cannot be matched to an active internet-school record, stop before paying.

Why the Final Exam Rules Matter

California’s approved Traffic Violator School Course Outline, OL 613, sets the constants. The final must contain at least 25 questions, and the student must score at least 70 percent. If the student fails, “one additional test may be administered but shall not be the same test.” The student must re-enroll in another traffic violator school class after failing the second test.

OL 613 also gives the student up to 60 minutes to answer all final-exam questions. A provider’s “no timers” claim does not remove that exam window.

Provider-controlled terms still differ:

  • Best Online Traffic School and 5 Dollar Traffic School advertise unlimited attempts or retakes without explaining how they fit OL 613’s two-test limit. Verify whether a new enrollment or restart is involved.
  • Aceable says the state allows up to three tries on each level assessment. Those checks are provider course layers, not the final exam.
  • I Drive Safely permits unlimited chapter-quiz retakes. That is separate from OL 613’s final-exam rule.

Do not confuse chapter quizzes with the final. Before paying, check what happens after a failed second final, whether re-enrollment costs more, and whether progress carries over.

How We Selected the Five Schools

The DMV search returned 211 internet-school records on September 4. Each selected school matched an active Internet record by E-number and business name, offered a statewide course, disclosed price and operating details, and added a distinct choice such as payment timing, language, app access, support, or video. Inclusion is not an endorsement; the DMV directory defines the licensed universe.

5 Dollar Traffic School: $5 Base Price and Optional Bundles

If price is your first screen, the provider page for E1014 displayed a $5 course. It said that price included registration, the course and final exam, unlimited logins, open-book exams, electronic submission to DMV and the court, unlimited course attempts, and proof of completion.

The course was advertised for mobile devices, with progress retained when switching devices. The reviewed checkout showed a $5 course fee and $5 total before upgrades. Its optional bundles cost $5 for audio plus a course printout, $10 for those features plus case-status notification and access to the court-rejection reason, or $15 for the preceding features plus a duplicate completion certificate and driving-record form. Audio is included at no extra charge in Best Online Traffic School’s published offer, so compare the package you would actually use.

Preserve a screenshot of the registration summary and final amount. Decline optional services you do not need, but keep anything required by your court.

Before enrolling: match 5 DOLLAR TRAFFIC SCHOOL COM — E1014, verify the $5 total in the current cart, and confirm that your court and due date are entered correctly.

Best Online Traffic School: Pay After Passing and Three Languages

If you want to test the course before committing payment, Best Online Traffic School E1314 advertised free registration and payment only after passing the final. Its public flat price was $27.99.

The provider advertised access on phone, desktop, and tablet; English, Spanish, and Chinese versions; audio narration; a 25-question final with a 70-percent passing score; unlimited retakes; a free electronic certificate copy; same-day electronic filing; and 24/7 online chat.

The payment model does not change the court deadline or state standard. Confirm when payment must clear and how unlimited retakes are implemented.

Before enrolling: match BEST ONLINE TRAFFIC SCHOOL — E1314, confirm the selected language and audio access, and capture the $27.99 post-pass total and filing terms.

Safe2Drive: Seven-Day Support and a Public Flat Price

If access to a person matters, Safe2Drive E1854 advertised customer service by phone, email, and live chat seven days a week. Its California course page displayed $24.95 and said there were no hidden fees.

The provider described a self-paced course on desktop, phone, or tablet, with an open-book final, court processing, and an emailed Receipt of Completion.

Safe2Drive calls the program an “8-hour” course, but California’s online standard is 42,500 words, not a course clock; 340 minutes applies to classroom instruction. Treat no-timer and shortest-time advertising as provider claims, not promised finish times. OL 613’s separate 60-minute final-exam window still applies.

Before enrolling: match SAFE2DRIVE — E1854, verify the $24.95 cart total, and confirm the current support hours and reporting language.

Aceable: App-Based Lessons and Detailed Assessments

If you prefer an app, Aceable E0803 advertised a California traffic-school course in its app and common browsers. The page and cart displayed a $26.10 promotional base price beside a $49 reference price and described nine levels using videos, GIFs, and other short-form material.

The reviewed cart preselected a $15 “Instant Proof of Completion” add-on, raising the total from $26.10 to $41.10. It also offered one free month of roadside assistance that renews at $5 per month if accepted. Review both choices before paying.

Aceable restated the 25-question minimum, 70-percent passing score, and two final attempts. It allows up to three tries on each level assessment, advertises no course timers, files completion electronically, and emails a Completion Receipt.

Before enrolling: match ACEABLE TRAFFIC SCHOOL — E0803, verify the promotional price and any optional add-ons, and ask what happens if you exhaust the state-allowed attempts.

I Drive Safely: Text or Premium Video

If presentation style is the deciding factor, I Drive Safely E0138 advertised text-based and premium video versions of its California course. The text course showed a $19 promotional price beside a $39 reference price during this review.

The provider described automatic progress saving, a 25-question final, a 70-percent passing score, and one retake. It advertised same-day electronic reporting at no extra charge and phone support from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday.

The reviewed cart kept the text course at a $19 total. It offered a $9.99 video-format upgrade and a $14.95 instant proof-of-completion option. A roadside offer would renew at $5 per month after a free first month if accepted. Do not assume the text-course price applies to those additions.

Before enrolling: match IDRIVESAFELYCOM — E0138, select text or video deliberately, and record the full price for that format.

Reporting Is Not the Same as Court Acceptance

California DMV’s Traffic Violator Course Completion database makes submitted completions available to designated courts one day after submission. Provider phrases such as “instant,” “same day,” or “immediate” describe a claimed submission time. They do not guarantee when a court will update a case.

After finishing, save the receipt and completion email, check every identifying detail, request corrections immediately, and confirm with the handling court that completion was received and credited.

Leave time to fix a wrong case number, failed exam, payment problem, or court mismatch. Only the court can confirm that the requirement is satisfied.

Do Not Enroll Yet If Any of These Apply

Pause before paying if:

  • the court has not authorized traffic school for your citation;
  • you have not confirmed your assigned completion date;
  • your earlier traffic-school timing may place the new violation within the 18-month restriction;
  • the charge, vehicle, license type, alleged speed, or case status may make you ineligible;
  • the exact school and E-number do not appear as active for internet instruction;
  • the cart total or required services are unclear;
  • the provider’s sales page conflicts with your court notice; or
  • your deadline is too close to complete the course, correct errors, and confirm court receipt.

Until the companion eligibility guide is published, the handling court remains the source for your eligibility and deadline.

California Traffic School FAQs

Are all online traffic schools accepted in California?

Use a school that appears as active under Internet instruction in the California DMV Traffic School List, and follow the handling court’s order. Similar names and advertisements are not enough; match the exact E-number.

How much does California online traffic school cost?

The five public offers reviewed ranged from $5 to $27.99 for the advertised base or flat price. That is a dated sample, not a statewide price range. Aceable’s reviewed cart was higher because it preselected an optional proof add-on. Verify the current total and remember that court charges are separate.

Does a higher price produce a better DMV result?

No different legal result is established by a higher course price. If the court approves attendance and the other requirements are met, the relevant questions are whether the school is active and licensed, the course is completed correctly, and the court receives the completion. Price differences may reflect presentation, languages, support, or optional services.

Does the school send my completion to the court?

Each provider in this sample said it submits completion electronically. California DMV says submitted completions become available to designated courts a day after submission. Confirm receipt with the court; a provider’s submission claim is not the final case-status decision.

Can I take the final exam more than once?

California’s approved course outline permits two final-exam attempts. Some providers advertise broader “unlimited attempts” language. Read the current terms to learn whether that means a fresh course enrollment, a restart, or another process after the second final attempt.

Is the shortest advertised course the right choice?

Do not select a provider from a “one hour,” “fast,” or “no timer” label alone. Compare approved-course status, learning format, exam rules, reporting, support, and the time you need to understand the material and correct a problem.

Choose the Clearest Complete Offer

Start with court approval and verify the exact school in the DMV directory. Compare complete price, device access, language, presentation, exam attempts, support, and reporting. Save the offer and receipt, finish early, and confirm court credit.
