Maine Defensive Driving Course: Point Credit, Insurance and Approved Options

Choose the exact approved course for the result you need before enrolling.

A Maine defensive driving course can earn a three-point driving-record credit when you successfully complete an authorized driver improvement course. Eligible insured drivers 55 or older also have a separate statutory insurance-discount benefit, so choose the course for the result you need.14

Choose the exact approved course. A website selling a “Maine defensive driving” class does not establish that the class qualifies for Maine’s point credit.

General information only: This guide explains Maine course options and their limits. It is not legal advice about your ticket, license status or insurance policy.

Start with the result you need

Maine’s Bureau of Highway Safety lists Maine Driving Dynamics and AAA online and classroom Driver Improvement options. Its approval page identifies the other listed courses as satisfying requirements for insurance discounts or three-point credit.2

Use your purpose to narrow the choice:

Your goalWhat to checkYour next step
Three-point creditAuthorized driver improvement course and your last credited completionStart with the BHS course page; ask BMV if the twelve-month limit is uncertain.
Insurance savings at 55 or olderPrincipal-operator status, approved course and statutory conditionsAsk your insurer to confirm eligibility and the dollar reduction.
Insurance savings under 55Your insurer’s own course-discount termsObtain acceptance of the exact course before paying. The older-driver statute does not establish an under-55 entitlement.
A court or agency orderRequired course, delivery format, proof recipient and deadlineFollow the order and obtain clarification from the issuing authority.
A pending ticket you want to contestThe ticket and court processHandle the case through the court. A course-credit certificate does not establish dismissal.

The point and insurance rules operate on different schedules. A class that earns point credit does not by itself prove that your insurer has applied a discount or that a court matter has been resolved.148

Three-point credit lasts one year

Maine’s governing rule, 29-250 Chapter 1, Section 6, provides one three-point credit for successful completion of an authorized driver improvement course. The credit is available only once in a twelve-month period and is erased one year from the completion date.1

These are two separate limits. The twelve-month rule restricts how frequently completion earns credit. The one-year rule describes how long that credit lasts. Taking another class a few months later does not establish another three-point benefit.

Maine grants one three-point credit for successful completion of an authorized driver improvement course, only once in twelve months. The credit is erased one year from completion.
The twelve-month rule limits how often you earn credit; the one-year rule limits how long it lasts. Confirm your last completion date with BMV.

BMV’s handbook says a driver may receive completion credit even with no driving record. Having no current points is not, by itself, a reason to rule out a course.3

If you already took a class, find its completion date and ask BMV whether another completion would qualify. If your record has changed since then, ask about the current record rather than relying on the total you remember from an old notice.

Credit does not mean your ticket disappeared

The course rule creates a point credit. It does not grant a change to the court’s judgment or a ticket-dismissal right.1 Keep three questions separate when following up: Did BMV record the credit? What happened to the ticket? Did the insurer apply the expected discount?

For example, suppose BMV confirms six current demerit points and accepts a three-point course credit. Subtracting three gives a three-point net total in this simplified illustration. It says nothing about dismissal of the underlying violation, your premium, or an existing suspension. BMV must confirm how the credit applies to your actual record.

If you have a suspension notice, contact BMV about the notice and your operating privilege. Do not drive on the assumption that finishing a class has restored your license. Keep any hearing, payment or other instructions in view while you ask whether course credit affects your situation.

Choose from the state’s approved course page

The BHS Maine Driving Dynamics page is the practical starting point. It provides the state program’s schedule and links to the listed AAA alternatives.2

Maine Driving Dynamics

Maine Driving Dynamics is a five-hour course. The public schedule is labeled for drivers of all ages. To register, use the sponsor’s contact number or registration link for the class you want.2

Check whether your selected class is one meeting or split between two dates. Put every required session on your calendar, and ask the sponsor what happens if you miss part of the course. A listing near your town is useful only if you can complete its attendance requirements.

AAA Online Driver Improvement

BHS lists the AAA Online Driver Improvement Course as an approved alternative. Follow the Maine-specific link from the agency page rather than picking an unrelated AAA course from a search result.2

AAA describes its Maine online Driver Improvement course as six hours.7 AAA’s Maine enrollment page calls the product Online Defensive Driving. Enter through the BHS link to reach the listed course; the different name alone does not mean you have chosen the wrong product.26

The Maine online site provides registration and completion-certificate instructions.6 Check that you are enrolling in the listed Maine course before entering payment details. A mature-driver course, novice driving-school package or private driving lesson can be a different product even when it uses the same brand.

For an online class, ask about the completion window, required assessments and how you receive proof. Save the enrollment confirmation so you can identify the exact product if a credit or certificate question comes up later.

AAA Classroom Driver Improvement

The BHS page also lists AAA Classroom Driver Improvement and links to its classroom registration route.2 Select Driver Improvement when navigating the provider’s broader driving-school offerings.

If a listing or checkout page leaves the product unclear, contact the provider before enrolling. Ask it to identify the Maine-approved course and explain the certificate and reporting process. For a court or agency order, also confirm that the issuing authority accepts that particular class and format.

Confirm the full fee before registering

BHS currently publishes a $70 Maine Driving Dynamics course fee and says some schools may charge an additional fee. Maine’s fee statute, 23 MRSA Section 4208, separately states a $65 registration fee for department-sponsored defensive driving courses.25

Neither official source explains the difference. The agency publishes a $70 course price; the statute states a $65 registration fee. Ask the sponsor for the itemized amount you will actually pay, including any local charge.

Compare that total with the exact AAA course you are considering. This guide does not quote a verified AAA checkout price or rank the courses by cost. Member status, the product selected and the final checkout can matter to a price comparison; use the price offered for your own enrollment.

Keep the receipt and enrollment confirmation together. If your only goal is insurance savings, obtain the insurer’s dollar estimate first. A discount that sounds attractive as a percentage can still produce a small dollar saving on the coverages to which it applies.

Insurance savings: a separate rule for drivers 55 or older

Under 24-A MRSA Section 2902-G(1), filed rates and rating manuals must provide an appropriate three-year premium discount for liability, personal injury protection and collision when the covered vehicle’s principal operator is an insured 55 years of age or older who successfully completes a BHS-approved accident-prevention course. The section sets no fixed discount percentage.4

Subsection 2 lets insurers impose specified conditions concerning an at-fault accident, moving violation or license suspension involving the insured or a household member insured under the policy. Subsection 4 excludes attendance required by a court or other government entity because of a moving violation. To continue eligibility, pass an approved course every three years.4

Ask the insurer to explain how those conditions apply to your household and policy. Obtain the expected dollar saving and certificate-submission instructions. Drivers under 55 should ask about insurer-specific options; this statute does not establish their entitlement.

For a savings comparison, use your insurer’s estimate and the full course price. As an illustration only, a $30 annual reduction produces $90 over three years if it continues throughout that period. A $70 course would leave $20 before any additional fee. Those figures are arithmetic, not an estimate of your policy’s discount.

A course does not replace the court’s ticket process

Maine’s published traffic-violation process directs drivers to pay or contest through the Violations Bureau and court system. The sources used for this guide do not establish an automatic statewide dismissal entitlement for completing defensive driving.8

If you want to contest a ticket, follow the directions on the ticket or the court’s Contest a Ticket page. If someone has offered a course-related disposition in your particular case, obtain its conditions from the authority handling that case. Ask what completion will change and what proof is required.

If you have a course order, confirm the exact program, accepted format, completion deadline and where to send proof. A class on the voluntary point-credit list does not establish that you have satisfied a different order. Keep the instructions with your certificate.

This guide does not supply a universal court-response deadline. Use your paperwork and contact the court if the timing or required action is unclear. Waiting for a class or a certificate is not a reason to assume the court has extended a deadline.

After completion, verify the result

Keep a readable copy of your completion certificate showing your name, course and completion date. AAA’s online instructions say the course dashboard directs graduates on accessing or receiving their certificate.6 For insurance eligibility, the statute requires the approved course organization to issue a certificate.4

Ask the provider who reports completion to BMV and whether you have a separate submission task. BHS advises that processing may take up to two weeks and directs license questions to BMV at 207-624-9000.2 That guidance does not guarantee a posting date or extend another deadline.

Follow up with the recipient responsible for each result:

  • BMV: Ask whether the three-point credit was recorded, which completion date it uses and whether your current operating privilege is affected.
  • Insurer: Submit proof as directed and ask when the discount starts, which coverages receive it and when you must complete another course.
  • Court or referring agency: Send proof through the required route and obtain confirmation that the course requirement was satisfied.

If proof is missing or contains an error, contact the course provider with your enrollment confirmation. If the certificate is correct but the result has not appeared, ask the receiving office what it needs. Keep copies of the document you sent and any acknowledgment so you can explain the issue without starting over.

Common course questions

Can I take an approved Maine course online?

Yes. BHS lists AAA Online Driver Improvement among its approved alternatives.2 Use the listed Maine product. For an order, confirm format acceptance with the authority that issued it.

Can I earn another credit sooner by choosing a different provider?

The rule limits the credit to once in twelve months.1 Switching providers does not create a separate credit allowance.

Will the same course handle points and insurance?

Check both outcomes before registering. Agency approval is only part of the decision; your circumstances must satisfy the benefit’s requirements, and the insurer needs proof through its own process. Ask for separate confirmation of each result rather than treating one certificate as evidence that everything was processed.

Choose the exact approved course for your goal, confirm the full charge and save the completion proof. Keep the certificate until the office responsible for the benefit confirms the result.
