Delaware-Approved Defensive Driving Courses Compared

Compare the course level, refund cutoff and certificate terms before enrolling.

Safe2Drive and DriveSafeToday both list Delaware basic and refresher courses at $14.95, with digital completion certificates included. Their refund cutoffs and published support hours differ, so those terms may matter more than the listed price. 23456

This comparison covers two online providers on Delaware DMV’s approved-course list. Use it once you know which course level you need; a lower fee does not make the wrong course useful. 1

General information only: For a required class, ticket or suspension notice, confirm the exact course with the court or DMV handling your case. Ask your insurer how a voluntary course will apply to your policy before purchasing.

Check your course level before comparing sellers

Delaware’s DMV FAQ says a basic course requires at least six hours of instruction and a refresher requires at least three hours. It places refresher completion no earlier than two years and six months, and no later than five years, after the initial course. Find your previous certificate and use its completion date when confirming your level. Insurance renewal timing is a separate question. 7

The insurance benefit requires voluntary attendance. A course ordered by a court or required by DMV for a Title 21 violation does not count as voluntary attendance, so it does not qualify for the insurance reduction. The three-point credit also does not automatically subtract three points from your record; DMV says it applies to future violations in certain situations. 87

If your notice calls for aggressive-driving or behavior-modification training, verify that named program before buying a basic or refresher course. DMV maintains a separate aggressive-driving course category. 1

Two approved online providers: price and completion terms

Both providers appear in DMV’s online directory. Safe2Drive is listed as A&A Safe2Drive. DriveSafeToday appears as !!! $14.95 Online Course by DST, with a link to drivesafetoday.com. Matching those directory links matters more than a seller’s approval badge. 1

How we compared them: We reviewed DMV listings and the providers’ public course, certificate, refund and support pages. We did not enroll, complete either course, test customer service or verify a final checkout total. This is a comparison of published terms, with no overall winner or claim to cover every approved provider. The links below are ordinary source links; this comparison uses no affiliate links.

The table uses the digital certificate included with each course. If you want a mailed or expedited paper copy, obtain its price before paying. DriveSafeToday advertises expedited paper options but the cited page does not establish their cost. We have not priced paper delivery for either provider. 5

DriveSafeToday’s price appears beside a promotional countdown. Treat $14.95 as the displayed offer, rather than a promise that the promotion will remain available. Review the course level, delivery choice and final amount on the payment screen. 45

Refund rules change where you can stop

Safe2Drive’s written policy gives you a 30-day window from registration to request a refund. You must also stop before completing the course or receiving a certificate. Starting some lessons does not, by itself, cross the published cutoff. 3

DriveSafeToday sets the cutoff at the final-exam screen. Opening that screen ends refund eligibility even if you have not answered anything. You request cancellation through your account. Its terms say refunds requested within four months of purchase go back through the original payment method; later refunds are paid through PayPal. 6

Check the refund cutoff behind the money-back headline. If the course is unsuitable, use the written cancellation process while you are still inside the provider’s limits. Save the request and any confirmation.

Safe2Drive requires a refund request within 30 days of registration and before course completion or certificate issuance. DriveSafeToday ends refund eligibility when you open the final-exam screen, even without submitting answers. Save cancellation proof.
Safe2Drive combines a time limit with a completion cutoff; DriveSafeToday uses the final-exam screen as its cutoff. Follow the provider’s cancellation process and save your request and confirmation.

Pacing and retakes: both allow you to return later

Safe2Drive describes multimedia lessons and a course that resumes where you left off. It advertises no lesson timers, while describing its basic program as six hours. That wording does not establish a tested completion time or justify skipping the material. Its basic course page states an 80% passing score and unlimited exam retakes without an extra charge. 9

DriveSafeToday describes text, audio and video, saved progress, and access from a computer, tablet or phone. Its basic and refresher pages list six and three hours respectively, an 80% passing score and free unlimited exam retakes. These features come from the course pages; we have not tested them. 45

The public offers we reviewed do not say how long paid course access lasts. If you plan to spread study over several weeks, ask how long your paid access lasts. Also check any language or accessibility feature you need in the exact course you will buy.

Online registration is not anonymous. Delaware’s rule requires the provider to obtain your driver-license number before giving you course access. It also requires an online affidavit confirming that you personally completed the course and are receiving the certificate. We have not tested either provider’s additional identity checks during study. 11

Support hours and certificate timing can settle the choice

If you expect to need help on a weekend, Safe2Drive publishes Saturday and Sunday support hours. If you study late on a weekday, DriveSafeToday publishes support through midnight EST. Both offer phone and email contact; their sites also provide chat. Published hours do not measure how quickly someone will answer. 3109

Both providers advertise immediate access to a digital certificate after successful completion. That is a certificate-delivery promise. It does not prove that DMV has already posted the completion or that your insurer has applied a discount. 945

Delaware’s provider rule requires notification to DMV within 14 days of course completion. A provider’s shorter reporting promise concerns its own submission; keep that separate from the agency’s processing. Save the certificate and ask the provider for reporting confirmation if the expected record update is missing. 11

The same rule requires a free completion certificate for students who present a valid Delaware driver license or DMV identification card. Optional paper delivery and replacement services should not be confused with the included completion certificate. 11

Spanish or classroom instruction: use the full directory

These two online options are a limited sample. Delaware Safety Council has separate English and Spanish entries in DMV’s directory, and its portal offers basic and advanced online courses in both languages. It also appears in the classroom list. Contact it about the specific course, schedule and enrollment terms you need. 112

We reviewed only Safe2Drive and DriveSafeToday in full. We also checked Delaware Safety Council and A Better Delaware Online Defensive Driving School (DelawareDriver), but left them out of the main comparison because their published certificate or refund terms were incomplete for our comparison. We did not review the remaining listings. Leaving them out is not a judgment about teaching quality. The official directory remains the starting point for a wider search. 1

For a Spanish refresher, clarify your prior-course date with the provider. Delaware Safety Council’s portal uses a prior-basic-within-three-years condition for its advanced offering, while DMV’s FAQ places refresher completion 2.5 to 5 years after the initial course. An advanced course taken earlier than that may not count as your refresher. The seller’s enrollment wording should not replace DMV’s statewide guidance. 127

Make the enrollment screen your final check

Once your course level and purpose are confirmed, compare the final payment screen with the published offer. Check:

  • The Delaware basic or refresher course selected.
  • The included digital certificate and any paper-delivery charge.
  • The total due and any optional service selected.
  • Your access-expiration date and the refund cutoff.
  • The language, device and identity requirements you will need to complete it.

Keep the receipt and certificate. Send proof to your insurer using its requested method, and follow up on the expected DMV record update separately.
