Compare the exact FLHSMV entry, every mandatory charge, course format, support, and proof process before enrolling.

Florida-approved BDI courses sit in the same state-approved four-hour course category, but their checkout prices and course experiences are not identical. Florida's rule describes a minimum four-hour scheduled block and allows up to 30 minutes of that block for breaks. A $5.94 headline can become $25.89 when a mandatory certificate and handling fee appears. Another provider may quote one all-inclusive price from the start.

This guide compares five online Basic Driver Improvement providers that appeared as statewide options on the current Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles list. It is a selection sample, not a ranking or the complete directory. No provider paid for inclusion, and this draft contains no affiliate links.

Quick answer: First make the election through the clerk that handles your citation. Then open the official FLHSMV BDI provider list, match the provider's exact name, and compare the required checkout total, language, device support, exam rules, help hours, refund terms, and certificate process.

General information only: Provider listings, prices, promotions, fees, and policies can change. A provider cannot decide whether your ticket qualifies, extend your deadline, or guarantee a court or insurance outcome.

† Provider-reported public-page observations, not completed-checkout receipts. Optional upgrades, taxes, or a changed promotion may alter the amount. The citation payment and clerk charges are separate from course tuition.

These are fit signals, not endorsements. The FLHSMV list also contains county-limited schools. The five above were selected because their entries did not carry a county-only label and their public pages disclosed enough information for a useful comparison.

Which Florida BDI Course Should You Choose?

Choose the course that makes the full required price and completion process easiest to understand for your situation.

  • Want one displayed course charge instead of separate mandatory lines: American Safety Institute displayed $18.95 as a flat price. This is a dated public-page observation, not a completed-checkout guarantee.
  • Want an audio option: American Safety Institute advertises narration; IMPROV advertises a podcast-style audio experience.
  • Need Spanish: Safe2Drive's Florida page advertises English and Spanish. FLHSMV also marks several entries as offering other languages.
  • Want classroom backup: Florida Safety Council appears as classroom and internet on the official list.
  • Want weekend help: IMPROV advertises support seven days a week. Florida Safety Council publishes weekday online-support hours.

Do not pick on price alone when your deadline is close. A clear refund policy, reachable support, and an uncomplicated certificate process can matter more than a few dollars.

Five checks to make before paying for a Florida BDI course

Match the provider, check county coverage, total every charge, confirm course fit, and plan how you will prove completion.

Why the Cheapest Headline May Not Be Cheapest

Florida's provider market uses several price presentations:

  1. a course price with a mandatory state, certificate, handling, or processing line;
  2. one advertised all-inclusive course price;
  3. a temporary sale price beside a higher crossed-out price; or
  4. a very low starting price that requires more detail at checkout.

For example, I Drive Safely displayed a $5.94 course price and a mandatory $19.95 state certificate and handling fee. The disclosed required total was therefore $25.89. Safe2Drive displayed $22.95 plus a $4 processing fee, or $26.95 before optional services.

That arithmetic does not prove either provider's final checkout is lower than every competitor. It only shows why the same charge types must be counted for every school.

Price rule: Do not call a Florida BDI course “cheapest” until you have taken the same election purpose and required service level far enough through each registration flow to see every mandatory charge. Save a screenshot of the breakdown before paying.

Your course price is also not the total cost of resolving the citation. You separately pay the clerk the amount required for the election. Florida law reduces the qualifying civil penalty under section 318.18(3) by 18%, but other costs can remain.

How We Selected the Five Providers

The current FLHSMV table contained more than 50 BDI entries on September 1, 2026. Some were classroom-only, some were limited to one or more counties, and some appeared to share contact details or similar websites. This article does not infer ownership or independence from a brand name, phone number, or platform.

Every included provider met four tests:

  1. Exact state entry: The provider's exact name appeared in the current FLHSMV BDI table.
  2. Statewide presentation: The state entry did not carry a county-only restriction.
  3. Bindable BDI page: A public Florida four-hour BDI page could be tied to the entry.
  4. Decision-useful disclosure: The page disclosed current pricing plus meaningful format, language, exam, support, refund, or reporting information.

Inclusion does not mean MyRoadWise recommends a provider. Omission does not mean another approved course is worse. Always use the official list for the complete current universe.

I Drive Safely: Low Headline, Mandatory Handling Line

The FLHSMV entry I Drive Safely is listed for internet and classroom delivery. Its current Florida page displayed a sale price of $5.94 for the four-hour course and a separate $19.95 state certificate and handling fee. Count both: the disclosed required charges total $25.89 before any optional upgrade.

The provider describes 24/7 access, saved progress, chapter review quizzes, a final exam, and unlimited attempts for the quizzes and exam. Its public page also distinguishes the four-hour BDI course from the eight-hour and 12-hour programs.

That course-type distinction matters. A cheap four-hour registration does not satisfy an order for an eight-hour Intermediate Driver Improvement or 12-hour Advanced Driver Improvement course.

Before enrolling: confirm that the cart still shows the four-hour Florida BDI course, identify every required charge, decline unneeded upgrades, and save the certificate instructions.

American Safety Institute: Flat Public Price and Audio Option

The exact state entry is American Safety Institute, LLC, listed for classroom, internet, and DVD delivery. Its four-hour BDI page displayed $18.95 and described that amount as flat with no hidden fees.

The provider advertises a mobile-friendly online course, saved progress, optional audio narration, and unlimited final-exam attempts. It says completion is automatically reported to FLHSMV and the clerk and that the student also receives a certificate.

Treat reporting language as a service claim, not permission to stop monitoring the case. Florida Statutes section 318.1451 gives approved providers reporting duties, but the student's practical obligation is to meet the clerk's deadline and confirm receipt.

The provider page also uses broad statements about racing, insurance, and guaranteed passage. Those claims are not used here to decide legal eligibility or insurance treatment.

Before enrolling: verify the $18.95 cart total, whether narration is included, the refund cutoff, and the exact destination and timing of each completion report.

IMPROV: Audio-Led Format and Seven-Day Support

FLHSMV lists Traffic School by The Improv Comedy Club for internet delivery with other languages available. The current Florida page displayed a $23.95 promotional price with $44 crossed out and called the price all-inclusive.

IMPROV advertises six chapters, access on common devices, a podcast-style audio option, an open-book final exam, and unlimited retakes. It also advertises support through SMS, email, chat, and phone seven days a week.

The provider says it reports completion and offers a refund if requested before the course is finished. Read the current terms for exclusions and timing; a short FAQ is not a substitute for the full policy.

The page uses “dismissed” and insurance-savings language more broadly than this article does. Florida's elective BDI result is withheld adjudication, no assessment of points for the eligible citation, and the defined civil-penalty reduction—not a promise that the ticket disappears.

Before enrolling: confirm the promotion, languages, support hours, refund terms, reporting destination, and whether any optional certificate service appears in the cart.

Safe2Drive: Spanish and a Disclosed Processing Fee

The official entry Safe2Drive is marked for internet delivery with other languages available. Its Florida course page displayed $22.95 plus a $4 processing fee, for $26.95 in disclosed required charges.

Safe2Drive advertises use on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops, plus English and Spanish versions. Its FAQ describes a 40-question multiple-choice final, an 80% passing score, and unlimited attempts without an extra charge.

The reporting instructions require close reading. The FAQ says a ticket-election or court-ordered student should print and submit the certificate to the court, while a department-required student is electronically reported to FLHSMV within three business days. That is a useful warning against treating “automatic reporting” as one universal process.

Before enrolling: select the correct reason for attendance, confirm the combined $26.95 charge, and ask the issuing clerk whether you or the provider must deliver proof.

Florida Safety Council: Online or Classroom

FLHSMV lists Florida Safety Council for classroom and internet delivery. Its public online BDI page displayed $36.75 as one complete price. A current classroom listing displayed $40 for a scheduled four-hour session, showing why format must be compared separately.

The online course page describes chapters with timing requirements, videos, review questions, a final exam, and unlimited exam retakes. The council publishes weekday online-support contact details. A classroom route may suit a driver who prefers an instructor or does not have reliable internet, but location and schedule availability must be checked.

The provider's pages make sweeping insurance statements. Use the Florida statute and your insurer—not course marketing—to assess premium treatment.

Before enrolling: choose online or classroom deliberately, confirm the current schedule and price, and verify how and when the completion reaches the issuing clerk.

Reporting: Provider Filing Does Not End Your Checklist

Florida law requires approved course providers to report course completion electronically. Section 318.1451 states that the provider must transmit completion information to the department through its certificate system within five days after the course is finished. After receiving the certificate number, the provider must submit the certificate to the clerk through the Florida Courts E-Filing Portal within three days.

Those clocks govern the provider. Your clerk may set an earlier or differently worded completion-and-proof deadline for the case. Provider pages also describe reporting differently depending on why the student took the course.

After finishing:

  • download and save the certificate;
  • save the completion date, certificate number, and receipt;
  • follow the clerk's instructions for any student-submitted copy;
  • allow for the statutory reporting process without waiting past your case deadline; and
  • confirm with the clerk that the certificate was accepted and the case is satisfied.

Do Not Enroll Yet If Any of These Apply

Pause before paying if:

  • you have not made and documented the election with the issuing clerk;
  • the exact provider name is absent from the current FLHSMV BDI list;
  • the state entry is limited to a county other than the one on your citation;
  • the cart says TLSAE, DETS, mature-driver, eight-hour, or 12-hour course instead of four-hour BDI;
  • you hold a CDL or CLP, were cited in a commercial motor vehicle, or the violation may be excluded;
  • you may have elected within the preceding 12 months or reached eight lifetime elections;
  • your clerk deadline is too close for support, testing, and reporting; or
  • the required checkout total or refund rules remain unclear.

If you are still deciding between an election and a hearing, read traffic school versus court before buying a course. To check a provider without relying on logos or ads, use the online traffic school legitimacy checklist.

Florida BDI Course FAQs

Are all Florida-approved BDI courses valid in every county?

No. The current FLHSMV table labels several providers for citations from specified counties only. Choose a statewide entry or verify that a limited entry covers the county that issued your citation.

How can I compare Florida BDI course prices?

Add every mandatory course, certificate, assessment, handling, and processing line shown for the same service level. Promotions and checkout charges change, so this comparison does not name a cheapest provider.

Does Florida require a four-hour BDI course?

Florida's rule requires a minimum four-hour scheduled BDI block and allows no more than 30 minutes of that block for breaks. Do not confuse it with an eight-hour intermediate course, a 12-hour advanced course, or a first-time-driver course.

Does the provider send my certificate to the clerk?

Florida law gives approved providers electronic reporting duties, but provider instructions vary and the clerk controls your case. Keep the certificate and confirm receipt rather than assuming the case closed automatically.

Can a provider tell me whether I am eligible?

A provider can screen the registration, but the issuing clerk controls the election in the court record. Confirm eligibility, prior elections, payment, and deadline with that clerk before enrolling.

Is a voluntary BDI course guaranteed to lower insurance?

No. Ticket-election protections and voluntary insurance discounts are different questions. Ask your insurer before buying a course for a discount; the future Florida insurance guide will address that issue in depth.

Choose the Clearest Complete Offer

The right Florida BDI course for you is an approved course that covers your county, shows every required charge, works in your preferred format and language, provides reachable support, and leaves enough time to correct a certificate problem.

Start with FLHSMV's list, not a search ad. Match the exact entry, capture the checkout total, finish before the clerk's deadline, and verify that the court received the completion.
