Montana Defensive Driving Course: Insurance Benefits, Points and Course Choices

A Montana defensive driving course can help lower your insurance bill if you are 55 or older and meet the state’s course rules. It does not remove points from a Montana driving record.18
Course websites often offer several reasons to enroll: saving on insurance, following a court order or improving driving skills. Choose the benefit first, then confirm that the exact course fits it.
Montana has a separate discount law for members of the Montana National Guard who meet its rules. Both laws exclude a class taken as punishment for a moving traffic violation.54
General information only: This guide explains Montana course and insurance rules. Ask the court handling your citation or your insurer about the requirements for your case or policy.
Start with the benefit you need
Use this table to decide whom to contact before paying. An insurance approval does not establish a court result, and finishing a class does not establish an MVD point adjustment.
| Your reason for taking a course | What the evidence supports | First step |
|---|---|---|
| You are 55 or older and want an insurance reduction | Montana requires a qualifying premium reduction after successful completion of an approved program; the insurer determines the amount.1 | Send your insurer the exact course name and ask how the reduction would apply. |
| You are a Montana National Guard member | A separate statutory reduction applies to qualifying insured operators of covered nonmilitary vehicles, subject to its own exclusions.5 | Ask about the Guard provision and the qualifying course. |
| You want points removed | MVD says a defensive driving class does not remove points.8 | Check your record and contact MVD about any disputed entry. |
| You received a ticket or a course order | Your court’s instructions and eventual disposition need to be confirmed. This guide establishes no statewide elective course-dismissal entitlement. | Contact the court listed on the citation before enrolling. |
| You want practical driving instruction | Montana DRIVE offers a distinct adult workshop; its published 2026 adult season ran in summer.11 | Check the official program page for the next available schedule. |
If you need both an insurance benefit and court compliance, ask each recipient separately. Keep the responses with your enrollment information. A provider’s certificate can show completion, but the recipient still needs to determine whether it satisfies the relevant requirement.
The 55+ insurance benefit has specific conditions
Under Montana Code Annotated Section 33-16-222, you must be at least 55, be an insured driver of a covered vehicle and pass the qualifying highway traffic safety program under Sections 61-2-102 and 61-2-103.167
Filed rates for liability, bodily injury or collision coverage must provide an appropriate premium reduction for a driver who meets those rules. Your insurer sets the amount. The law does not promise a fixed percentage off your whole bill.1
Ask how much you would save in dollars. Compare that amount with the class fee. A discount on one part of the policy may be less than the same percentage off the whole bill.
The discount lasts three years after you pass the course. You must take another approved course every three years to remain eligible.2
Your insurer may set rules for keeping the discount. Section 33-16-223 allows rules tied to an at-fault crash, a moving-violation conviction or guilty/no-contest plea, or forfeiture of bail or collateral for a moving violation.2 Ask which rules your insurer uses and what would cause you to lose the discount.
A punishment course does not trigger the required reduction
The required 55+ discount does not apply when a court or another government entity specifies the course as punishment for a moving traffic violation. That exclusion is in Section 33-16-225.4
When you ask your insurer about the class, explain why you are taking it and include any court order or agreement. Being old enough for the 55+ benefit does not remove this exclusion.
Your insurer may discuss a separate voluntary discount. Ask for its terms. Such an offer does not change the punishment exclusion in the law.

Ask about reimbursement separately
Your insurer may also pay back the class fee. The required discount and this optional refund are separate benefits under Section 33-16-222(2).1
Ask whether your insurer offers a fee refund and what proof it needs. Count it in your savings only after the insurer says you qualify.
Montana National Guard members have a separate route
Section 33-16-230 has its own rules for Montana National Guard members. You must be an insured driver of a covered nonmilitary vehicle and pass the qualifying defensive driving course referred to in Section 61-2-102(2). The insurer sets the appropriate reduction for liability, bodily injury or collision coverage.56
The discount lasts three years after you pass the class. You must pass another qualifying course every three years to remain eligible. A class taken as punishment for a moving traffic violation does not trigger this required benefit.5
The insurer may deny the Guard discount based on your record. The lookback covers the three years before you apply, as well as the time you receive the discount. Section 33-16-230(4) lists these events: a moving-violation conviction or guilty/no-contest plea, moving-violation bail or collateral forfeiture, or a court conviction or finding of fault in a motor vehicle accident.5
Mention the Guard law when you contact your insurer. Its rules differ from the 55+ rules, including the record lookback. This law does not give every veteran or every person with military service the same benefit.
Which Montana defensive driving courses are approved?
The Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance currently directs consumers to an MDT list for the 55+ auto insurance discount. The linked document is dated November 29, 2021. It documents approval for that purpose; it is not a statewide court-acceptance list.910
The list identifies:
- AAA RoadWise Driver Course, online;
- AARP Smart Driver, online and classroom;
- National Safety Council Defensive Driving 4-Hour Course;
- Traffic School Online Mature Driver from Distance Learning Company;
- Defensive Driving by IMPROV Montana Course;
- DriveSafe-Montana 4 Hour Defensive Driving Course;
- Cyberactive’s Go To Traffic School course;
- Montana DRIVE advanced driver education one-day workshops in Lewistown.10
Start through the CSI auto-insurance page and follow its approved-course link. Match the specific product name, rather than relying only on the provider’s brand.
Because the document carries an older date, confirm that the course being sold now is the accepted version before you buy. The current agency link is useful evidence, but it does not establish every provider’s present fee, enrollment availability or revised product name.
Send your insurer the exact course name and delivery format for confirmation. If the name has changed, ask about the replacement product and save the answer. A search snippet is not enough to resolve that difference.
Compare convenience after confirming acceptance
Once you have an accepted course, compare the features you actually need: online versus classroom delivery, accessibility, total price, exam requirements, certificate delivery and refund terms. Check those details on the provider’s own enrollment page.
A low advertised fee is less useful if the course misses your requirement or cannot deliver proof in time. For a court deadline, work backward from the date proof must reach the court. Ask about certificate delivery before choosing a course that sends it by mail.
Use the official list as a starting point, then check your recipient’s acceptance and the provider’s current terms. The list does not establish today’s prices or guarantee that every program is enrolling.
Montana DRIVE is a different kind of course choice
Montana DRIVE adult workshops provide practical instruction at the Lewistown closed track. OPI’s published 2026 adult schedule ran from June 2 through August 14. The adult workshop fee was $410, with advance registration and payment required.1113
Those are 2026 season details, not a promise of open enrollment or the next season’s price. For an October reader, the listed adult season has ended. Use the official Montana DRIVE page for future announcements.
The adult workshop, teen workshop and school-bus CDL program are separate offerings.12 Choose the adult program if that is the training you intend, and confirm any insurance purpose with your insurer. A program’s place on the mature-driver list does not make all its offerings interchangeable.
A course will not remove Montana license points
MVD expressly states that completing a defensive driving class does not remove points. It says conviction points remain for three years from the conviction date, while the convictions themselves stay on the driving record for life.8
Waiting for the point period to end does not delete the conviction. A course certificate does not change MVD’s stated rule.
If your goal is to understand an entry, obtain your record through MVD’s driving-records instructions. Check the conviction date and the particular entry you are questioning. For an apparent error, describe the error to MVD and ask about the appropriate correction process.
If you have a suspension notice, deal with that notice directly. A course purchase is not evidence that you may drive or that a licensing restriction has ended. Ask MVD what action is required for your situation before relying on the class.
For a ticket, contact your court before enrolling
A website selling a Montana course cannot decide the outcome of your citation. Start with the court named on the ticket and ask whether a course is available in your case, whether permission is needed first and what completion would actually accomplish.
Billings supplies one local example of why the distinction matters. Its police FAQ says a person with a first traffic offense involving a low misdemeanor may ask the judge for a deferred sentence at the scheduled appearance. The person must still pay a fine, and other conditions may apply. The FAQ does not establish an automatic defensive-driving dismissal program.14
That is a Billings example, not a statewide eligibility rule. For your own case, get answers to these questions:
- What disposition or requirement are you asking about?
- Which exact course and format will the court accept?
- Must the court authorize enrollment first?
- What are the payment, completion and proof-submission deadlines?
- Who must submit the certificate, and how?
- How will you confirm that the court received it and entered the intended disposition?
Keep your case number and written directions together, and continue responding to the citation while you investigate a course option. Resolve unclear instructions with the court before paying to enroll.
For a commercial license or an offense involving commercial driving, identify that fact when you ask. This guide does not establish a CDL dismissal or record-masking option.
Decide whether the insurance savings justify the cost
Use your insurer’s quote for the coverages receiving the reduction. A provider’s maximum advertised percentage does not tell you how much your own bill will fall.
For illustration, suppose your insurer confirms a $40 annual reduction and the accepted course costs $30. The first-year savings after the fee would be $10. Over three full years, the simple total would be $90 after the one course fee, assuming the reduction remains $40 each year and you retain eligibility.
Those figures are a calculation example, not a Montana discount rate or a quoted course price. Actual premiums, eligibility and policy terms can change. If the insurer confirms only a percentage, ask it to convert that percentage into the dollar reduction on your policy.
Travel and time may also matter. Add travel expense for a classroom or track course if you are comparing it with an accepted online option. Choose practical instruction for its training value when that is your goal; do not assume a modest premium reduction will cover a larger workshop expense.
Keep the certificate and verify the result
For the 55+ benefit, Section 33-16-224 requires the organization offering the approved course to issue a certificate after successful completion of the qualifying course.3 Ask the insurer how to submit it and what other information it needs.
Keep the certificate, payment receipt and acceptance response together. Check that your name and course information are correct before sending proof. Ask the recipient to acknowledge receipt when possible.
For insurance, request confirmation of the reduction amount, the affected coverage and the start and end dates. Check the policy documents or billing information after processing. If the expected reduction is missing, send the acceptance response and certificate again and ask which requirement remains unresolved.
For court compliance, follow the court’s submission instructions and confirm the resulting disposition. Do not treat the provider’s “completed” screen as confirmation that your case is finished.
For points, expect no course-based removal under MVD’s stated rule.8
Choose your purpose before your provider. Get the exact course accepted, finish it as required and submit proof. Keep your certificate until you have confirmed the insurance benefit or court result.
