Wyoming Defensive Driving Course: Tickets, Records and Insurance

Ask the court or insurer about course acceptance before enrolling.

A Wyoming defensive driving course may help with a traffic ticket or an insurance discount, but the benefit depends on who accepts the class. Start with the court handling your citation or the company insuring your car.

Wyoming does not use a driver-license point system, so there are no points for a course to remove. 1 Ticket-related course options depend on the local court and prosecutor. 2 The state’s former required insurance discount ended in 2021; a discount under a current policy needs confirmation from your insurer. 11 12

That still leaves useful options. This guide explains published local programs, what to check before enrolling, and the difference between getting a ticket dismissed and keeping a violation off WYDOT’s driving record.

General information only: This guide explains Wyoming traffic-course options in general terms. It is not legal advice about your case.

Quick answer: For a ticket, ask the court named on your citation whether you qualify and which course it accepts. For insurance savings, ask your insurer about eligible courses and policy terms. Buying a class on your own does not establish either benefit. 2 15

For a ticket, get permission before buying a class

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says Alive at 25 may be available instead of a fine for some young drivers. Acceptance rests with the circuit court and county or district attorney where the citation was issued. Not every court accepts it. 2

Read the citation before searching for a provider. The court’s name matters more than a course website’s Wyoming label. Municipal and circuit courts can have different procedures within the same area.

Ask about a course option before paying. Wyoming’s driver-licensing definition of conviction includes payment of a fine or court cost and an unvacated forfeiture of bail or collateral. 3 For a Highway Patrol citation, follow the response instructions on the ticket and contact the circuit court about traffic school. 2

Laramie Municipal Court: an online course with prior approval

Laramie Municipal Court publishes an online course option for eligible defendants. Apply on or before your citation’s appearance date, obtain approval before enrolling, complete the court’s form, and pay its $150 non-refundable administrative fee. The court estimates a separate course cost of $20-$40. 5

Its page gives you 60 days to complete the course and provide the certificate. Confirm when your approved period starts. After verification, the record shows dismissal rather than a guilty plea. If you miss the completion deadline, the citation is not dismissed and the original citation amount is due. Participation is limited to once every 12 months, based on citation date. 5

Exclusions include CDL holders, crashes, passing a school bus, failure to stop and give information or render aid after an accident, speeding 25 mph or more over, reckless driving, and DUI. 5

Call 307-721-5205 or email municourt@cityoflaramie.org to confirm eligibility, provider acceptance, and total payment. 5

The court says the course route costs more than simply paying the citation. 5 If your speeding violation falls within a WYDOT record exclusion, compare that extra cost with the benefit of having the court case dismissed.

This is the City of Laramie’s municipal program. Cheyenne’s courts in Laramie County are separate.

Campbell and Weston Counties: Alive at 25

Both counties publish a route to possible dismissal. Their conditions require a driver to be under 25 when cited, have an eligible bondable offense in that county, have no more than one prior traffic offense in five years, have no previous Alive at 25 participation for court attendance, and have no crash involved. Drivers under 18 need parental or guardian consent. 6 7

Enroll within five business days of receiving the citation and select the $35 Court Involved Option. Send the certificate to the county attorney within five business days after finishing. 6 7

Both pages also warn that proof must arrive before the court date for consideration of alternatives. If the class schedule or certificate deadline runs past that date, contact the county attorney and court for instructions. Enrollment alone does not excuse an appearance. 6 7

Dismissal is possible, not automatic. Confirm the disposition with the county attorney. Campbell County lists 307-687-6307; Weston County lists 307-746-9131. 6 7

Cheyenne Municipal Court: attend court first

Cheyenne Municipal Court says a driver 25 or younger may qualify for a program and must first attend court to receive the class option. Its page frames the question as getting a ticket reduced; it does not promise dismissal for every participant. 8

That age wording differs from Campbell and Weston’s under-25 rule. Use the eligibility instructions for your court.

Cheyenne’s municipal court does not hear tickets issued by the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office or Wyoming Highway Patrol. Those go to Laramie County Circuit Court. 8

If your court is not listed here

These are published examples, not a complete directory. Call the court on your citation and ask:

  • Is a course option available for this offense and my driving history?
  • Which provider and format do you accept, including online instruction?
  • What fees, appearance requirements, and deadlines apply?
  • Does completion mean dismissal, a reduced charge, or another result?
  • Where must I send the certificate, and how do I confirm receipt?

Keep the instructions with your citation. Resolve unclear answers before paying for a class.

Wyoming counts moving violations rather than points

WYDOT’s withdrawal guide says a fourth moving violation within 12 months brings a 90-day suspension. Each additional violation within a 12-month period of the last three brings another 90 days. WYDOT uses offense dates to determine the period. 9

Restricted class (RC) licenses have tighter rules: the guide lists a 90-day suspension for the first moving-violation conviction and one year for the second. 9

A voluntary class is not a point-reduction tool in Wyoming. 1 For a pending citation, ask whether your court offers a course arrangement that changes the case’s outcome. 2

Some speeding violations are excluded from the WYDOT record

Wyoming law excludes specified speeding violations from WYDOT’s records, with exceptions for school zones, construction zones, and commercial motor vehicles. 4

These ranges appear in WYDOT’s July 2026 traffic-law summary. They describe record treatment, not permission to exceed the speed limit. 10

Posted limitSpeeds WYDOT lists as not going on the record
80 mph81-85 mph
75 mph76-79 mph
70 mph71-79 mph
65 mph66-79 mph
60 mph61-65 mph
55 mph56-60 mph

The publications differ at 80 mph. Section 31-5-301(d) says up to 80 mph in posted 65-75 mph zones; WYDOT’s table stops at 79. If your citation is at that boundary, ask WYDOT about the discrepancy rather than treating the table as the statute. 4 10

The statute also excludes violations less than 6 mph over the limit in other zones, subject to the exceptions above. 4

An exclusion does not dismiss the court case or establish how an insurer will treat it. Ask the court whether a dismissal program offers a useful result for your ticket, and ask your insurer separately about policy consequences.

Insurance discounts depend on your policy

Wyoming repealed its former accident-prevention-course insurance discount requirement, effective July 1, 2021. The enrolled act also removed the statutory requirement for WYDOT to approve training for that discount. Current Section 26-14-105(c) is marked repealed. 11 12

An insurer may still offer its own discount. GEICO’s Wyoming page, for example, advertises potential savings of up to 10% on applicable coverages, specifies classroom or field instruction, and says an online course is not currently available for that program. 15

GEICO lists age 50 or older and voluntary completion among criteria that may apply. It also says eligibility and availability vary among states and GEICO companies. Confirm the terms for your policy; a court-directed class may not meet the voluntary-course condition. 15

Ask your insurer for the expected dollar savings, discount duration, eligible formats, and proof requirements before enrolling. Compare the fee with the savings quoted. A percentage applying to selected coverages is not necessarily that percentage off your entire bill.

CDL and CLP holders need separate guidance

Federal rules prohibit a state from masking a CDL or CLP holder’s traffic conviction, deferring judgment, or allowing diversion that would prevent the conviction from appearing on the CDLIS driver record. This applies in any motor vehicle, with exceptions for parking, vehicle weight, and vehicle defect violations. 13

Laramie’s program excludes CDL holders. 5 WYDOT warns that violations in a CDL or CLP holder’s personal vehicle may cause disqualification. 10

Tell the court about your commercial license or permit. Personal-car use does not, by itself, establish eligibility for diversion.

Common questions

Can I take a Wyoming defensive driving course online?

The purpose matters. Laramie’s municipal program describes an online course. GEICO’s Wyoming discount page specifies classroom or field instruction and says an online option is not currently available. Acceptance for one purpose does not establish acceptance for another. 5 15

Can I take Alive at 25 without a ticket?

Yes. WHP says the program is open to ages 15-24, whether or not they have a citation, and describes a 4.5-hour driver-awareness class. 2

Will a class prevent an insurance increase after a ticket?

A certificate alone does not guarantee that result. Ask your insurer how it will treat the ticket and whether a course discount applies to your policy.

For a ticket, ask the court on your citation about eligibility and the accepted class, follow its instructions, then confirm certificate receipt and final case disposition. For insurance, ask your insurer about the exact course and policy terms, complete an accepted course and send proof, then check the discount on your policy or bill. A certificate alone does not guarantee either result.
Court and insurance benefits need separate confirmation. Follow the instructions for your purpose and check the result after completing the class.

After the class, confirm the result

Keep your certificate and proof of delivery. For a court program, confirm receipt and ask for the final case disposition. Completing the class and getting the citation dismissed are separate steps.

For insurance, check that the promised discount appears on your policy or bill. If it is missing, contact the insurer with your completion details.

Your own WYDOT driving record costs $10. Requests are available at a driver examination station, through oneWYO, or by mail. Follow WYDOT’s identification and signature instructions for your chosen method. 14
